[ordered some, will order more, want to always have the next book ready - thanks!]

Help.

I need books to read to my daughter (9).

She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

Ideas?

Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.

Also, wow! boost some of those good answers from the community... wow! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Fedi-brain-hive, I need you once again.

Is there an that means "to make permanent?" Essentially, I need the word "permanentize" to exist, but evidently it does not. Surely another word exists in its stead?

Please ! This problem has been vexing me for over three years (since I began tracking the way cities changed their street space during the pandemic and whether or not those changes were permanentized).

I'm so tired of writing "were made permanent."

I was vacationing with a friend on Scotland island, off Sydney, in this amazing B&B. We were having breakfast at the verandah when the host approached us hesitantly.
"I hope I am not offending you if I ask this, but we were curious why you were speaking after we have left."

Most in seem to either lean to or revert entirely to standard US spelling ...

But I would have thought folk in the US would like a little bit of standard British English on occasion.

Make them feel a little closer to Hobbiton or something.

Interesting discussion between educated Chinese and educated Chinese aka "bananas" 🍌.

I belong to the latter group and have always felt like an inferior Chinese in Selangor (my state) because I couldn't speak fluent and so-so . The only place I really felt like I belonged was in Penang where people spoke my dialect & I am one of the dwindling numbers that speak it.

I'd like to say that I'm fond of the (mainly) US term 'garbage'.

In the UK it's 'rubbish' or 'refuse' or 'Toryism' or something.

But they don't have the same sound as garbage.

And it's nice to have a language that's so varied, don't you think?

Having the opportunity to have been taught or to grow up speaking the lingua franca, aka , is a privilege that not everyone has - including many valuable free, open source developers. English may be dominant, but when initially explored/adopted , which made it a household name, at the time the docs were almost entirely in Russian. Many repos have docs and issues primarily in Chinese. FOSS is bigger than the English speaking world.

A quick question for -language speakers: What are the pronouns for "stags"?

That is to say, do you refer to them as "he" or "it"?

The other day, I learned that the British pronounce "plait" as "plat." I thought I knew all the differences between British and American pronunciation, but that one had escaped me. I kind of like "plat," to be honest. And to-MAH-to. My wife and I should have been British.

In it's possible that you cannot order your food in . The waiters at the restaurants sometimes speak and understand only . Almost everyone in Finland understands English. Only the older generation may need customer service in Finnish but some people see a dilemma here. For example one of my friends. For her, this is a matter of principle. But I don't mind.

Something I've noticed about a lot of American TV shows — the first season starts off with a great idea but by season two or three it has become all about the personal lives of the characters and their relationships and the core idea gets relegated to the background and gets lost.

“House” was a great medical drama at first and I loved it for the medicine but eventually it became all drama and not much medicine. The same with “The Good Doctor”.

(I can contrast this to UK TV but I guess that’ll have to be a post for another time 😛)

“Warrior” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5743796) is a show which doesn’t do this as much and which manages to maintain a balance between the core story and the character development. Or maybe, it’s because the story is all about the characters 🙂

But what I do like about the show a lot is the fact that the characters learn, grow, and change. Characters who started out looking as if they are pure evil start getting shades of grey as you learn about them and their motivations. Others change their attitudes and stance as time goes on.

The show is constantly changing and alliances constantly shift. And it’s marvellous to see these happening and to see a story being told so deftly 🙂

As the end of season 3 approaches, I can see a lot of changes and a bunch of new alliances happening. I hope there’s a season 4 since I want to keep on watching!

Speaking of whining: try asking a to meet basic standards for , , and .

They'll whine about "religious freedom". is not implicated here: teach whatever you want, as long as you also teach math, science, . (If anything, forbearance would offend religious freedom by privileging religion over all other compelling state interests, a violation of the .)

They'll whine that those subjects are adequately addressed in their studies. Nonsense. Kids graduating these "" have been shown to be severely deficient in English and other subjects.

The schools and their supporters are lying; and what's more: they know it.

Okay fuck this for a game of soldiers.

Have been bed-ridden* since Tuesday afternoon incapacitated by fucking flu, and last night at 00:30 I woke up to an arrhythmia. Beta blockers worked a treat the way they usually do and I've now had enough of being ill.

Got mildly dressed, went downstairs, and am now tapping into that sweet sweet endorphins release.

What does "Voidkind" mean? DVNE's new album is called Voidkind, but I could not find any translation.

Is the word made up? What could be the meaning of it?
