The English language is a wonderful thing, and we know some rules without knowing we know them.

‘Have you ever heard that patter-pitter of tiny feet? Or the dong-ding of a bell? Or hop-hip music? That’s because, when you repeat a word with a different vowel, the order is always I A O. Bish bash bosh. So politicians may flip-flop, but they can never flop-flip. It’s tit-for-tat, never tat-for-tit. This is called ablaut reduplication, and if you do things any other way, they sound very, very odd indeed.’ From ‘The Elements of Eloquence’ by Mark Forsyth.

I'll do it again in , maybe it is of interest for others too:

@heiseonline is on of the biggest official accounts on by a german media organization. It's now a year old and I had a look into the ~62k followers. Turns out, that federation in the seems to work: Less than a fourth are from mastodon.social, the rest are on more than 1900 different instances.

The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.

“All gendered "-men" nouns immediately become delightful when you substitute "-folk": fisherfolk, countryfolk. And even when there's a perfectly suitable gender-neutral alternative, firefighters & guards pale in comparison to firefolk & watchfolk. In this essay I will”

British Cultural Insight 1.0 (The Best.)

I've noticed over the past 3 weeks at our current housesit in a tiny village, that my normally outgoing and hilarious partner Tony has been reserved and almost--dare I say it--embarrassed by my chattiness and cheerfulness in public. This is not like him, and only happens when we visit the UK.

After he looked uncomfortable when I squeed at some extra large paperclips at the post office (I mean, extra large paperclips, who wouldn't squee?) I finally asked him what the problem was?

To this, I received possibly the best--and-to me, funniest--insight into British culture yet.

Looking extremely pained, he said:

"It's only when I'm here and I can't turn it off! It's bred in. Being middle class Northern English in public, around strangers is like constantly standing in an elevator or at a urinal. You know deep down that anything you say could and probably should embarrass you to death. You constantly feel like you're doing something wrong and worse, somehow, deep down, you know you are. That's why everyone's so superficially outgoing up here to make up for it."

To which, the lady behind him murmured a heartfelt. "Oh aye. That's what it feels like. Every day. You get used to it though." And then she patted him on the back.

They shared a moment of British solidarity, before it got awkward.

Meanwhile I purchased my extra large paperclips and they are awesome.

The saga continues...

[ordered some, will order more, want to always have the next book ready - thanks!]

Help.

I need books to read to my daughter (9).

She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

Ideas?

Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.

Also, wow! boost some of those good answers from the community... wow! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Starlings¹, derived from the Old word 'Staer', are known for their mesmerizing gatherings in massive flocks during autumn and winter, a breathtaking spectacle known as murmurations.

In , Starlings have an intriguing connection to Myna birds², both of which are capable of mimicking human speech. One fascinating tale from medieval lore revolves around Branwen³, the daughter of Llyr. Mistreated by her Irish husband, Branwen teaches a tamed starling to speak and sends it across the Sea to inform her brother, Bran, who then raises an army to rescue her. This myth highlights the intelligence attributed to starlings and their association with communication and aid in .

Additionally, historical names for Starlings reflect various aspects of their behavior and appearance. For instance, the term "Sheep Stare" from highlights their habit of alighting on the backs of sheep to pick at ticks in their coats, a behavior beneficial to both parties.

Did you know that apprentices to chimney sweeps were indentured servants?

The Poor Relief Act of 1601 forced each parish to apprentice kids.
The parish paid a master sweep to teach boys the job.

The would be indentured for 7 yrs.

Boys cost between 7 shillings (35p) to 4 guineas (£1.35).

The job left boys disfigured, asthmatic, & prone to “chimney sweeps' carcinoma” an often terminal .

It was the 1st cancer to be recognised as work-related.

Did you know that Bridge was once lined with body parts?

In , the punishment for treason was hanging, drawing & quartering.

The accused would be dragged in a vessel sans wheels, hung until almost dead, their genitals & entrails removed, burned & then the rest cut up.

The parts were then boiled with salt (to preserve) & cumin (to keep away birds) & stuck on a spear upon the bridge.

Displaying stopped in 1678, but the for persisted until 1998.
