Before I sign off for the night I want to share this from the incredible JC Lau! (sorry screenshot from Twitter)
If you are a gameDev going to the GameAwards please use your platform! #GameDevs
Looks like there were more layoffs this week at Monster Closet Games in Montreal. They had a previous wave of layoffs a few months ago, I believe.
Monster Closet is a studio that was built by the core team that made Hyper Scape at Ubisoft Montreal after they all left the studio together a few years back. Miss working with quite a few of those guys.
No idea what game they were working on as they haven't gone public with what they were working on yet to my knowledge. Hope those laid off are able to land on their feet quickly.
Folks, if you believe the #Unity3D backpedal, you need to- sit with your feelings a sec, because. Heh.
Nobody deletes a git repo for "low views." #GameDevs don't delete anything unless someone tells them to / they need to, because, why would you? It costs nothing to just leave it there. Unless.
I keep reading about this whole #unity drama because I just cannot believe how anyone would think it's a good idea to essentially punish and discourage #gamedevs for building successful games. And lots of weird shit has happened in recent years.
The ultimate conspiracy theory what's going on with Unity:
The executives who sold their shares before announcing the changes will get a huge bonus next year, cause they increased the revenue by 1000%+, because all the games out there can't just switch the engine and have to pay.
These people will leave shortly after they got their bonus.
There's no conspiracy, that's called corporate raiding and it's existed for a long time. Regulators are hobbled so the raiders move faster than regulators can act. Happens on cycles of a few decades.
This is a direct attack on indie studios, all of them. The purpose is to consolidate #gamedevs back to the major studios, not let them profit on their own efforts by themselves. #unity was always going to be a honey pot.
Question to all the #gamedevs out there. Would you be interested in coworkspaces tailored to gamedevs?
Do they make sense anymore with remote work?
What would you like them to have?
