People are very tied to their language and don’t like change, especially when it #challenges a #PowerStructure . In #Winnipeg , Bishop Grandin, a symbol of #colonial power, is being #replaced by #languages of the #historically #oppressed : #Cree , #Ojibwe & #Métis . While this is precisely the point behind the change, it may make those uncertain about changing power structures uncomfortable.

Today in Labor History February 27, 1973: 300 Oglala Sioux activists from the American Indian Movement (AIM) liberated and occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota. This was the site of the infamous Massacre at Wounded Knee (1890). They occupied the site to protest a campaign of terror against them by the FBI, and corrupt tribal officials, and the tribal thugs knowns as GOONs (Guardians of Oglala Nation). The occupation lasted over 2 months, before being quashed by the U.S. government. 3 Native activists were killed. Dennis Banks and Russell Means were indicted for their roll, but charges were later dropped due to prosecutorial misconduct.

What I learned while researching Indigenous philosophy is that the debates around philosophy will be explicitly exclusionary . They'll say that Indigenous philosophy isn't rigurous enough. Others will say it didn't begin with the Greeks.

I specialize in Incan-Andean philosophy and learning it comes with, practically, 0 guidance. As philosophy diversifies with Chinese, Indian, African, Islamic, etc., we need to rememeber Native American philosophies, too

Fawn Wood’s “Kikāwiynaw” is my favorite record at the moment. Her voice is quite captivating. And she really knows how to write a love song. Not sappy or romantic, just simple enduring love.

This record’s title is a Plains Cree word that translates to “our mother.” Therein she honors the female spirit.

My favorite track is “For Dallas,” but they’re all hauntingly beautiful.
