Do you live in or near #Manchester, UK, and want to adopt a kitten? 4 of the kittens at my in-laws' place are still looking for a home. They're a few months older than on this picture. PM me for contact details if interested or want to know more.
Your regular reminder that, before they were taken over by cars, the streets of our cities were shared spaces where lovers strolled, children played, and life was lived.
Pause to take a tram ride through #Vienna, in 1906.
Roads Were Not Built for Cars, #Manchester edition.
Before they were thoroughfares for cars, city streets were venues for bicycles, walkers, carriages, trams...and fun. Check out some of the kids in this clip from Rochdale in 1900.

While in the North, Let’s indulge ourselves with a modern not so modern architecture wonder. When a triangle tops a box that tops a building with straight lines it creates interesting shapes 😊
I'm very honoured to have been included in the "Hidden Histories : Black In Manchester" resource by Parise Carmichael-Murphy. It's full of interesting and important historical information and people, and is (not because of me!) an absolutely recommended read 🙂
If you recall the U.K. rave scene and Manchester's Haçienda nightclub and Factory Records, you'll be familiar with names like Tony Wilson and Peter Hook. A new book, "I Thought I Heard You Speak," is telling a different story: That of the women who played a vital role — DJs, managers, promoters, journalists and even the U.K.'s first female bouncer. Vice talks to author Audrey Golden about how she found the forgotten women.
I find myself with an unexpectedly free day tomorrow before I fly back home in the evening. Before I throw money at WeWork – are there friends in #Sheffield or #Manchester whom I could trouble for a desk and access to a coffee maker? #workanywhere
For the final #BlackFriday of #BlackMusicMonth (which is every month for me, to be fair), one more photo from my personal archive, and one featuring artists from this very city. This is Manchester's own mighty Children of Zeus, at an amazing show they put on at Manchester Cathedral in 2019, one which I maintain will go down as a true "were you there?" moment. If you don't know their music, check it out! ✊🏿⚡
Hmmm.... Looks like #JeremyHunt will enhance (accelerate) the powers of metro-mayors in the West Midlands & #Manchester next week, ahead of some expanded powers for other regional mayors.
While the leading 2 beneficiaries come one from each major party (allowing Hunt to claim an even hand), he won't be sorry to enhance Andy Burnham's ability to present him self as a separate node of political power from Labour's parliamentary party.
Hunt may be hoping this adds to the ructions inside Labour?
If you're in Manchester or Salford tonight and want to come out to hear some music, this is the place to be! Come hear a great lineup of DJs spinning a mix of genres, all on old-school 7"/45rpm vinyl! And don't be too shy to come and say hello 🙂
A new inquiry into women’s safety at the hands of Greater Manchester Police is merely “lip service”, according to a woman who alleges she was stripped, drugged and sexually assaulted while in the force’s custody.
Hmmm.... interestingly #AndyBurnham has decided to reduce emissions in #Manchester by using a carrot not a stick.... out goes the plan for a clean air charging zone, to be replaced by major investment in #pubictransport to encourage people out of their (commuter) cars.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, as many cities have plans for new zones to cut emissions.... if Burnham's pivot gets results, might we see a ramping up of #investment in (and subsides for) public transport?
Came across some amazing angels in stone yesterday, during a visit to a cemetery at Swinton, Greater Manchester.
A graveside memorial favourite in Victorian times, seems like they're making something of a comeback!
The Trees Not Cars campaign is making a renewed push for some much needed green space in central Manchester. They've been pushing for the former Central Retail Park in Ancoats (on Great Ancoats Street, right next to a Primary School) to be made into a park. The council thinks we need new offices and don't care about the extra pollution or the quality of life for those living nearby.
