#Samsung Electronics anticipates a 78% YoY drop in Q3 operating profit, primarily attributed to #semiconductor losses amid a global chip industry downturn.
However, the expected operating profit was 30.5% higher than the average estimate.
The semiconductor business — typically Samsung's cash cow — is likely to see continued pressure as memory prices and demand for end products remain low.
#WTMicroelectronicsCo says it has signed an agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the company's shares for $3.8 billion US - more than $5 billion #Canadian -in an all-cash deal expected to close in the first half of 2024. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6966761
In the words of one of our first time submitters "Just yesterday, I was dreaming of a tapeout cooperative, and it turns out to exist. Thanks to you all!! Looking forward to TT05!"
Thanks to everyone who submitted and all the contributors. Also a huge thanks to Efabless for sponsoring the project!
Today I learned #TSMC stands for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Pretty generic name, if you ask me.
Also, fun politics fact: Many people are afraid #China will try to attack and conquer #Taiwan soon. Due to TSMC's monopoly in the #semiconductor space (92% of the biggest semiconductor innovations are by them), China depends on them very heavily.
If they were to attack Taiwan, the Taiwanese government would immediately shut down TSMC, and with it China's semiconductor supply.
Ugh, hate that I had to screenshot that other site but breaking physics news in the last hour of a simulation that seems to confirm the South Korean room temperature semiconductor claim.
I wrote this a while ago, but it's getting increasingly relevant.
The thin connections that underpin the #semiconductor industry are too fragile to withstand an era of #ClimateDisaster and #war, of rationing of energy and resources, of widespread #famine, of international suspicion, and of unprecedented #migration away from coastal areas and newly forming deserts.
Training large AI models is very expensive - maybe even more than designing semiconductor chips!
"Taping out" a large semiconductor chip typically costs several $Ms. But it takes many months or even a few years to design a chip.
Training large AI models, in comparison, may cost from hundreds of $K to many $Ms each time, but the iteration cycle is maybe every few months. So an AI startup may burn through cash even faster than a chip startup!
A RISC-V chip with with secret RTL (not to mention the layout) does not qualify as open-hardware. Otherwise MS Word would be open-source software just because it implements the Open Document Format (ODF).
Germany wants to end Europe’s semiconductor dependence on Asia.
The European Union's stated objective is to reach 20% of the world market by 2030, twice as much as today. In order to hit this target, it will require a fourfold increase in production.
As Europe's largest economy, Germany is spearheading this movement. In addition to Infineon's new factory in Dresden, Intel and Wolfspeed have announced major investments in Germany.
Vintage Computing Bubble! I'm looking for company history and biography of Motorola. I'm especially interested in the beginnings of their semiconductor and microchip business, thus the time frame 1950-1990. Any suggestions on books, articles, documents, documentaries? I already consumed the easy finds (Wikipedia, Freescale history, NXP history) #retrocomputing#vintagecomputing#semiconductor
#Malaysia has become a hotspot for global #electronics & #semiconductor investment, with country's electrical & electronics export seeing a sharp increase of 54.2%. However, the surge of electronics & semiconductor investment in Malaysia is sharply contrasted with low #unionization; only 6% of all #Malaysian#workers are #unionized, the majority in the public sector.
Samsung expected to report 80% profit plunge as losses mount at chip business (www.cnbc.com)
The semiconductor business — typically Samsung's cash cow — is likely to see continued pressure as memory prices and demand for end products remain low.
Intel's glass substrate promises 1T transistors by 2030 (interestingengineering.com)
Intel said it has made a significant breakthrough in the development of glass substrates for next-generation advanced packaging.
