While the nytimes and WaPo are describing IDF's killing of World Central Kitchen aid workers as a single strike, Haaretz (a left-leaning Israeli newspaper) is reporting there were three strikes, separated enough that personnel had time to move the injured between vehicles.

"At some point, when the convoy was driving along the approved route, the war room of the unit responsible for security of the route ordered the drone operators to attack one of the cars with a missile.

Some of the passengers were seen leaving the car after it was hit and switching to one of the other two cars. They continued to drive and even notified the people responsible that they were attacked, but, seconds later, another missile hit their car.

The third car in the convoy approached, and the passengers began to transfer to it the wounded who had survived the second strike – in order to get them out of danger. But then a third missile struck them. All seven World Central Kitchen volunteers were killed in the strike."

since am one of those people Dx at the tender age of 50 (yes, 50. and yes am older now, shut up), am not acquainted with the american rituals of national days or awareness months involving autism.

welp, let me do this as a gentle reminder:

  1. BLACK
  2. INDIGENOUS
  3. PUERTO RICAN
  4. CARIBBEAN
  5. LATINOAMERICANES
  6. WOMEN

can be too.

and in my case: with a sprinkling of good ol' extra spicy .

just as i got my Dx, a show that's like Doogie House, but make him autistic, came out.

i almost broke our only TV.

i hate that to this days these are images of that are peddled in this country.

getting my diagnosis SAVED MY LIFE. do you know what's the life expectancy of autistic Black people? around 50.

even less if COPS are involved:

If you know an autistic person, you’re probably aware that April is “Autism Awareness Month.” What you might not know, however, is that April is a month of pure hell for folx.

The concept originated in 1970, when we understood a lot less about autism than we do today. Since then, the month has been co-opted by groups like Autism Speaks for fundraising. But what neurotypical people don’t realize is that the vast majority of these groups are actually

considered to be hate-groups by the community. So much of the discourse and dialogue around autism has centered NT people. When you consider NTs to be the ‘norm’ and NDs to be outside of that norm, the discussion veers toward “how do we help them be normal?”

It's a thread! 🧵

AutisticManager,
@AutisticManager@techhub.social avatar

They make autism sound so horrible that some parents would rather their child die of a preventable disease than risk developing autism. (Note: Vaccines don’t cause autism, nor is autism something you can develop — it’s congenital. This is a harmful conspiracy theory.)

So seeing groups that are so afraid of you and the way that your brain works that they think you would have been better off not being born spend a month talking about “supporting” autistic people and begging for money is just soul-crushing.

What makes it worse is that it’s so hard for people to know what groups are actually supporting autistic people and which groups are hate groups. So many people make donations to these groups in hopes that they’ll be used to support autistic people when in reality they’re being used for torture and eugenics research. /7

AutisticManager,
@AutisticManager@techhub.social avatar

A lot of the fundraising that goes on during “Autism Awareness Month” goes towards finding a “cure” for autism. This is despite the fact that the vast majority of the autistic community does not want to be “cured” and actually takes offense to the idea that NT people want to change our brains to work like theirs instead of understanding how our brains work and being compassionate.

And the worst of all, by far, of the research that’s going on is around “preventing” autism. Let’s not beat around the bush here. We’re talking about eugenics. Some of this research is around detecting what causes autism and trying to intervene before birth, and some of it is around detecting whether an unborn child will be autistic so that the parents can terminate the pregnancy.

Groups like Autism Speaks have made autism sound so horrible that some parents would rather not have a child than have an autistic child. /6

AutisticManager,
@AutisticManager@techhub.social avatar

Autistic people will have to yet again suffer a month of being talked about by people who don’t think that our opinion matters. Misinformation will spread like wildfire despite autistic people trying their hardest to fight it. Companies and organizations will trot out the color blue and their puzzle pieces to show how much they "care”

Another fun fact: the puzzle piece is not the symbol that people identify with. In fact, if you see an organization use a puzzle piece as part of its logo or website, you can be 100% guaranteed that they’re on the wrong side of autism. So yes, April is going to be hard for us. /8

BREAKING: Forest defenders have launched a tree sit to stop old growth logging on federal Bureau of Land Management land in Southern Oregon. Community members are opposing the Poor Windy timber sale, which targets thousands of acres of mature and old growth forest.

The timber sale is just one of countless projects the BLM has proposed across the region that will clearcut mature and old growth forests, flying directly in the face of commitments made by the federal administration.

Forest defenders are calling for the immediate cancellation of this sale and an end to all logging on public lands. #ClimateCrisis

People have spent years downplaying COVID by saying "it's just the flu." This is reckless for many reasons, one of those being that new flu strains pose a constant threat to public health. I really hope we don't have to experience directly how devastating the flu can be.

To be clear, there are no signs of human-to human transmission of the bird flu strain that is spreading among dairy cattle, and has infected a person in Texas. But please understand that we monitor and worry about new flu strains because they are a serious threat. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/01/health/bird-flu-cattle-human.html

Dogs are like those sphinx gates in the movie adaptation of "The Never-ending Story" (terrible compared to the book, which is one of my top 5 favorite books of all time, even as an adult, and the book's Uyulala is way cooler than those sphinxes). Anyway. You can't fake it. Dogs see right through you. Rather, they smell right through you. They can literally smell human emotions. If you're scared of them, they will get scared about you and be weird with you. Don't force people who don't want to interact with dogs to interact with dogs.

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs there’s a guy who lives semi-locally who is absolutely terrified of dogs, and he always makes panicked and indecisive movements any time he needs to walk near a dog, which of course attracts the attention of said dog and thus makes the man panic more. It’s such a shitty position to be in 💔

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I used to work in an office where the boss would bring her dog in periodically, despite knowing that one of my colleagues was scared of dogs… “Oh, ha-ha… but he’s so small and friendly!”

This dog was indeed small, and friendly with many people, but he’d growl and bark non-stop at the scared person.

I’m a BIG fan of dogs, but I’d be a pretty shit trade unionist to be ok with people being afraid in their own workplaces, and it can’t have been exactly relaxing for the dog

This is your annual reminder that many autistic people consider groups seeking to prevent or cure autism to be eugenicist hate groups and would strongly prefer that any donations you make go to groups that seek to improve the lives of autistic people instead

A ittle pudgy bulldog came flopping down the stairs of this apartment complex I was in today. He was trying to be gruff but I confused him by talking to him like we were old buds. He looked back at his owner like "Who is this guy? Do I know this guy??"

ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs,
@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs@kolektiva.social avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1 I try to tell people to talk like that when their dogs haven't decided if someone is safe or unsafe. The tone of voice is everything. Someone getting stern and correcting their dog is showing that dog that they're worked up, too. If they're worked up, then there is something to be worked up about -- the dog'll decide on "unsafe". They always look to their person for their reaction to the stranger.

I am just wondering why people get dogs who are bred so specifically but then put them in a life that goes against their nature. Like, why do people have St. Bernards if they aren't rescuing people in the Swiss Alps? Do you really think you can make them happy in your condo?

Pawpower,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs Some people with disabilities who decide to owner train their service dogs do this and it makes me absolutely wild. Like I am really sorry that you feel like you need a 100 pound Eastern European Doberman pincher to prove what a big macho guy you are, and what a bad ass, but really I don't think this High drive dog is going to work well lying under your desk for eight hours while you do technical support and then go home on the para transit van.

If you plan on driving somewhere to see the , my advice to you is this:

As someone who drove several hours to see the last eclipse in the middle of nowhere in Idaho, I cannot stress enough how ridiculous traffic will be when it’s over. Be prepared for a trip to take from 3 to 10 times longer than it normally takes. Know that you will likely be stopped In gridlocked traffic for hours. Pack food. Know that there may not be a bathroom. Plan for the worst.
