I live in the Dystopian Disunited Kingdom. I'm here to be informed of corruption, nebulous networks and shady government plans.

Really, I'm just a high-functioning potato, so cut me some slack 😏

Now that most of the compost tea & sludge are contained, I've showered, and the laundry is running, I can reflect on what went wrong this morning.

In a nutshell, all of it. All of the things I thought might go wrong when trying to strain 20 gallons of compost tea by myself, in my PJs, after a near all-nighter finishing a report, did in fact go wrong.

Did I learn any lessons? Probably not.
Do my veggies appreciate my efforts? They damn well better!

MostlyTato,
@MostlyTato@mstdn.social avatar

@DrTCombs
This is my standard modus operedi, don't worry. Making liquid feed is sooooo smelly... I don't even bother straining it, just fish out all the comfrey and stick it on the heap then fill up the bottles. I do wear rubber gloves though. And all the flies in the neighbourhood have a party.

Going to keep off the politics as much as possible in future. Didn't move here to fall down that hole. Shouting at the world does very little. I do my bit. Write to MPs and MSPs and protest where I can. The pile on culture of other social media sites is not one I want to recreate here.

It's good not to get drawn in.
I post or reply about politics a lot less on here than I did on the other place. Twitter led you in, encouraged the anger and confrontation. I don't get that here, but though I still try and keep informed, and value other people's views, I don't feel the need to express my own view as much. I haven't really got anything to say that hasn't been said already anyway.

Cats never wonder why people bring them food. They never wonder if they deserve to be massaged and tucked away into warm arms, or why there is a lap to sit on, and fine blankets and pillows when the lap is not there.

Cats have a deep and centered sense of deserving all of these things. "Of course I should be loved."

I think it's one of the things I like most about cats. And when I feel depressed I try to emulate them.

He follows me, jumping along by my side like Tigger, meowing and even throwing himself in my path and social rolling.
He seems to have no concept the idea that I might do anything other than spend all my time with him. At least until he sees something more interesting, then he sods off.

Since there hasn't been a lot of new shows I pulled out the 3 Hobbit movies and The Lord of the Rings to binge watch.

Wow was the Hobbit over-produced. What was a basic children's book got the full bore LOTR makeover and takes about 8 hours to watch.

Meanwhile the Rings movies all got Director's Cuts since I bought the DVDs an ice age ago so each runs close to 4 hours now with the end credits on the first one running some 28 minutes.

The LOTR movies hold up well except for some matting.

MostlyTato,
@MostlyTato@mstdn.social avatar

@adwright
I thought the Hobbit films were over produced too, but I really liked the LotR films. I thought they set the tone of the books pretty well, even leaving out some stuff I thought was boring and adding in some more interesting stuff the books only alluded to.

@stux My sister's neighbour's cat would do that. I'd call her name in the back garden and I'd hear a meow way down the block. Five minutes later she'd pop over the fence with another meow.

When it rains after a prolonged period of dry weather, there is a smell created. It's called Petrichor. A wonderful word, and utterly useless trivia item. The smell is caused by something call Geosmin, which is produced by bacteria in the soil. Humans can smell it at 5 parts per TRILLION. In contrast Sharks can detect blood at concentrations of 1 part per million. On this one substance, we have a better sense of smell than sharks do for blood. Humans are amazing!

I’m completely baffled by the “15-minute city” conspiracy. It’s so strange to me how people can take the most innocuous concept (or in this case GOOD concept) and twist it into some imaginary government plot for controlling and surveilling people’s lives. (1/9)

MostlyTato,
@MostlyTato@mstdn.social avatar

@Timdmackey
I used to live in Oxford. I also have a conspiracy theory friend who was panicking over the 15 minute city stuff. I tried to explain it to her, how Oxford needed something like this and the conspiracy theory was conflating lots of other stuff with the much needed congestion relief...but no.

Their are tiers of conspiracy theory...
The credulous, fearful foot-soldiers. The mid level grifters. The top level instigators with a darker agenda to subvert, misdirect and divide.

This is quite the mystery, and I fear it is one that will forever remain unsolved.

For a couple of years now, a QAnon-type antivaxxer has been writing inflammatory anti-vax statements in chalk at the main bus stop in front of our main train station in Winterthur.

It is directly in front of a store, and was mostly ignored until they started writing things like "vaxxie lives don't matter", and suddenly, the store or the city started washing them off.

It was vaguely amusing when it was just "No sex with vaxxed people!". It seemed delusional and mostly harmless, though the people behind it were anything but as a group. But they escalated, and along with Swiss right-wing rhetoric, when it got to death wishes, I guess that was the line.

Anyway, they went away for a while, and then came back briefly, but were ignored again.

But tonight, in the same handwriting and place, there was a new message:

"Climate change is a lie."

So when people say we have to engage in dialogue with these folks?

No. They are part of a weird death cult and can fuck off into the sun.

MostlyTato,
@MostlyTato@mstdn.social avatar

You are right there, I just found it hard to express because it's not that simple...there is almost a wilful ignorance in some cases, a desire to belong to a consensus that hugely over simplifies. Too easy to dismiss it as 'stupid.'

Over ten years ago, I worked at an Apple Store and my job title was “Creative” but that pretty much just meant I spent all day teaching cute little old people how to use their new computers.

One day, this sweet little old man came in for a lesson (we’ll call him Bob). Bob wanted to create an email address so he could email his granddaughter.

We pulled up the page (let’s call it email.com) and Bob started to enter his info and he came to the username section and asked what he should put so I said “oh, you know, something like bob@email.com but more unique because that’s probably already taken.”

In order to give him privacy, I was looking away from his screen when he finally proclaimed “I got it! I’m bob@email.com!”

I was absolutely shocked, so I looked over at his screen and that’s when I realized Bob had become the proud owner of bobatemaildotcom@email.com.

About 250M years ago, 90% of species on Earth died during the Permian extinction. All of that loss created a lot of vacant niches to fill.

And not long after, the first mammals, our ancestors, appeared.

I find it comforting to remember that life on this pale blue dot will be resilient - whether we’re part of it or not.

Exactly this. If it can't survive how it's been designed to be, it's an evolutionary failure.
