Germany’s AfD is so extreme it was kicked out of the far-right grouping in the European Parliament last month, but Elon Musk thinks their policies “don’t sound extremist.” That’s because he’s also a fascist.

Did you know that (yes, the collection of screensavers for X11) is available on Android?

And that requires it to have a privacy policy in order to be available in the Play Store?

And that the maintainer chose to crowd-source a privacy policy where every item starts with "Unlike Google"?

It's become a great list of all the privacy violations Google did and still does. And I thought that it's gonna be long, but it's even longer than I imagined.

🇬🇧On the outcome of the European elections: Many thanks to our 186.000 voters in Germany. Congratulations to @marketkag who will be the last to represent us in the new EU Parliament.

The bitter election result (due in part to our own mistakes) is a disaster for us, the progressive parties as a whole and for digital civil liberties. We will live to regret this. The conservatives and far right triumph, which will mean less and less – only mentioning and . None of this has even been discussed in the runup to this election.

If you are also shocked by this development and want to do something about it, I encourage you to:
💪🏴‍☠️join the Pirate movement today and get involved so that we can do better and organise political countermeasures (including extra-parliamentary ones)! https://european-pirateparty.eu/members/

Suppose you cut Wolverine in half, top to bottom. What happens:

A) Half dies, other half lives
B) Both regenerate into new Wolverine
C) Half dies, other half lives, but the regenerated Wolverine has problems related to having two right or two left hemphispheres
D) Both regenerate, but with the problem described in C.

More than twelve years ago I was invited by @LaQuadrature to come to the Europarlament to help stop ACTA:
https://rys.io/en/65.html

This was the first time I got a chance to directly talk to MEPs to try change their minds on an issue I cared deeply about. It was not the last.

I've done a lot of activism, on both EU and national level. My experience with the European Parliament remains the best.

It really matters who we send there. And we do have a say on that.

Go vote. 🇪🇺

Before they will let me publish a new release of XScreenSaver on the "Play" [sic] store, Google, the most rapacious privacy violator ever, insists that a screensaver have a privacy policy.

This is where you come in!

I'd like this policy to be a series of bullet points: "Unlike Google, XScreenSaver will not [Thing.] An endless, concise catalog of their sins.

I need both your snark AND a link supporting your snark. It's critical for the joke to land. Include both.

GO!!

While #Adobe is doing an absolute stupid with their new licensing terms, and (now Canva-owned) #Affinity slashes prices by half in a "flash sale", I am once again asking people to consider supporting #FLOSS tools instead.

Yes, they are far from perfect.

But with a small fraction of what these closed source vendors are raking in, these tools could be made immeasurably better.

And they won't end up bought up and enshittified, as experience with past attempts at doing that to FLOSS tools shows.

Microsoft says they are making a bunch of changes to Recall to mitigate the many, many security and privacy problems that researchers have found over the last week:

Are Microsoft's changes going to be enough? We will check when they roll them out. But the important lesson here is that public security research made a difference here.

The main way to store + aspect in is with the lgbtq tag. 🏳️‍🌈

lgbtq=primary is for locations which cater to an exclusively or predominantly LGBTQ+ audience, either by the managers running it that way, or by overwhelming convention. Subtags (lgbtq:*=*) can be used for finer details.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

GossiTheDog, (edited )
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

Turns out speaking out works.

Microsoft are making significant changes to Recall, including making it specifically opt in, requiring Windows Hello face scanning to activate and use it, and actually encrypting the database.

There are obviously going to be devils in the details - potentially big ones.

Microsoft needs to commit to not trying to sneak users to enable it in the future, and it needs turning off by default in Group Policy and Intune for enterprise orgs.

GossiTheDog,
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

Obviously, I recommend you do not enable Recall, and you tell your family not to enable it too.

It’s still labelled Preview, and I’ll believe it is encrypted when I see it.

There are obviously serious governance and security failures at Microsoft around how this played out that need to be investigated, and suggests they are not serious about AI safety.
