As I behold "Crush!", the new Apple ad for their Ipad Pro ...

... I fluctuate, with heisenbergian indeterminacy, between "they are clearly trolling us" and "they are totally earnest and have no idea how completely sociopathic they appear"

@clive As a man who spent way too much time watching the Hydraulic Press Channel on YouTube, I support this commercial concept. It was, however, missing a monotone Finn providing commentary, so 8/10.

This is your regular reminder that most communications on Telegram are not end-to-end encrypted. Channels and groups are never end-to-end encrypted and 1-on-1 messages are only end-to-end when explicitly enabled.

@evacide I’m a big fan of #Wire for that purpose. I know one of the cofounders and he’s legitimately invested in security. I don’t know why it isn’t raised more often in these conversations.

It’s just been pointed out to me that the reason Apple runs a trade-in programme for older devices is so they can reduce the size of the used market, and has fuck all to do with recycling.

That’s blown my tiny mind.

timoj,
@timoj@mastodon.online avatar

@DJDarren That explains why I’m not constantly bombarded by opportunities to buy older, refurbished, or used iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, etc. from practically everywhere… oh wait. I absolutely am. Spend any time in the developing world and you’d be amazed how many phones have a second or third life.

We have high wind alerts and as I watch the trees blow outside my windows... I'm also thinking about how many old trees we have around... and about how all our power lines are above ground on poles.

So if I'm not online later... there's a reason... 🙂

timoj,

@danyork @Schouten_B Cheaper, of course, but also trenching in granite isn’t fun. What makes Vermont a fun drive makes it a utility nightmare even before you factor in the long lines from Quebec’s clean hydropower infrastructure.

Google never “won” the war against SEO & Bot Spam… it just barely stayed ahead, and only because search quality was a top priority for the company. That isn’t remotely true any more, and the avalanche of AI generated mediocrity has made that obvious… assuming you scrolled past all the ads to find that garbage results.

Bridge to Bluesky

Apparently, Ryan Barrett @snarfed.org@snarfed.org, an engineer/developer, is about to connect a bridge between Mastodon (Fediverse) and Bluesky.

Announcement here: https://snarfed.org/2024-02-12_52106

Of note the bridge is OPT-OUT. That is, your content will be automatically bridged to Bluesky, UNLESS you OPT-OUT.

So how do you opt-out? You have to DM Ryan Barnett at @snarfed, email him (somehow), file a GitHub issue, or put in your profile bio.

It’s rather mind-blowing 🤯 (but not entirely surprising) that over 200,000 people are willing to pay $3,500 for Apple’s new Vision Pro goggles! I mean… they do look like the most interesting entry into the VR / goggles world we’ve seen so far, and being deep in the Apple ecosystem I’d love to try them out. But that price point is a bit beyond where I’m ready to spend…

I have a new op-ed at NJdotCOM and the Star-Ledger proposing that the soon-empty Bell Labs headquarters should be turned into a Museum and School of the Internet. Where better?
https://www.nj.com/opinion/2024/01/save-the-old-bell-labs-as-a-new-museum-of-the-internet.html

timoj,
@timoj@mastodon.online avatar

@jeffjarvis Yes, but it would have also prevented the creation of the Internet. We’d still be doing circuit switching, metered billing, time-division multiplexing and dropping SONET rings all over humanity if their communication systems theory won. Ethernet, TCP/IP, the Internet Router, and the IETF came out of an entirely different tradition.

timoj,
@timoj@mastodon.online avatar

@jeffjarvis I’d also propose that the Holmdel facility is an equally good location and has been mostly rid of its asbestos. ;)
