I just want to say for my first post to the #Fediverse that I've already seen more #alttext in the last couple of days than I've literally seen in my entire life. @ontheotherside It's because here, engaging with people takes effort. But that effort is actually rewarded by people who want to talk to you. Not just by people who talk to you because arguing and it feels good to hit back because that's what algorithms have trained everyone to do.
hi Stormy, welcome, so great to have you on board! Yes, a lot of us here really love alt-text. It’s a great way of finding some species info on the bird depicted, or where that tree with its incredible blue blossoms grows, new vocabulary for non-native speakers, what the road sign in another country means, and all the other additional info that isn’t obvious at first glance, even for people with vision. And also the odd humorous side note hidden there that nobody wants to miss!
@ontheotherside This alt text has costed us a lot of sweat and tears. "please use alt text, disabled users need it", over and over, again and again, every single time a wave of newcomers arrives.
It's so reassuring to know all this has not been in vain.
@yuki2501@ontheotherside I listened to this when I got here last fall. So every image I post has #AltText, some with pretty detailed descriptions if the image warrants it.
Here’s one with a close-up of a seedling that sprouted on the forest floor of my 35 acres of woods this spring. We have had a nice wet year and the trees are happy.

It looks like @alt_text is still operating fine as an alternative for reminders.
Side note, in my alt text I’ve been trying to also include what was audible at the time of the image being taken.
