Hi everyone. I'm going to share a new .

I'm a (they/them) movement journalist in my 40s, currently based in Central . From 2022 until today's layoffs, I was Digital Editor at the @TexasObserver. I've been a writer, journalist and editor since at least 2011, when I got my start on the primordial political blog Firedoglake. My involvement with the Occupy Wall Street movement helped make me a journo and I've always worn my bias on my sleeve.

Some other job titles I've had included hemp reporter, editor, bookseller... I'm hoping to continue as a journalist or editor or otherwise in the media or nonprofit industry, and hoping to get .

It's all a bit of a shock today so let me share a little more about myself in this sprawling thread as I think of it.

I'm very proud of the work I did at the @TexasObserver, which I helped save from the brink of closing last year, in large part through the assistance of the fediverse. (2/?)

In July 2022, after joining the @TexasObserver, I published my expose on how the spreads dangerous lies about healthcare, hurting kids in Texas and nationwide. This reporting was nominated in 2023 for a GLAAD Media Award. https://www.texasobserver.org/emily-bazelon-transgender-healthcare-debate-new-york-times/ (3/?)

In November of 2022, I launched @TexasObserver, helping the Observer become one of the first publications to run its own server on the . We quickly amassed well over 15,000 followers as a result of our engaged presence here.

That month, I also contributed to "Are You OK?" a photo essay about the lives of young Texans which got us nominated for a National Magazine award. https://www.texasobserver.org/trans-kids-youth-are-you-ok-photos/ (4/?)

In March of 2023, I was a key a part of the emergency fundraiser to save the @TexasObserver from closure, which included a vital social media campaign on Mastodon and elsewhere that raised over $350k in under a week. We had hoped this would help the publication sail smoothly into its 70th year (this one) but it seems not to be. (5/?) +

In April, after we collectively saved the @TexasObserver from closing, I broke the story of a transphobic new dress code instituted by the Department of , a story quickly picked up by the international media. Here's the original story on the topic: https://www.texasobserver.org/sid-miller-department-agriculture-dress-code-transgender/

And an important followup: https://www.texasobserver.org/sid-miller-dress-code-transphobia-texas-agriculture/ (6/?)

In 2023, I spent about six months getting to know the queens and kings of , to tell their story as they defied a ban on their artistry that was threatened by the legislature, before ultimately being overturned in the courts. This was a feature in @TexasObserver magazine. https://www.texasobserver.org/austin-drag-queens-defy-ban/

In October, I traveled to Grapevine, a unique sprawling and psychedelic art installation which begins in a mutated suburban home ... all hidden away in a massive shopping mall. This also was part of the @TexasObserver magazine ... and is one of my favorite ever assignments. https://www.texasobserver.org/meow-wolf-grapevine-brrrmuda/ (8/?)

Most recently, I reported on how anti- laws probably violate international treaties, based on a letter of protest from a number of nonprofit organizations. https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-anti-lgbtq-laws-united-nations-human-rights/

And I even got to visit with a group that counts the bugs and other creepy crawly and flying critters every week at one of 's most beautiful nature preserves. https://www.texasobserver.org/insect-lbj-wildflower-valerie-bugh-austin/

Looking ahead, I've got a very long piece coming out in the March/April 2024 issue of @TexasObserver magazine about the devastating effects of long on millions of Texans. (10/?)

Most of all, I hope I can continue to reach people and make a difference after losing such an important platform for my work. Fingers crossed I can keep doing what I do. Thanks in advance for any job tips, or story leads, that folks feel like sending my way.
