There is no political left, or political right.

It's a false dichotomy designed to distract from the true state of the world.

Money, and no money.

There are rich people. And, there are poor people pitted against one another in service of rich people.

That's the dichotomy.

The top 25 richest Americans are together worth just over 1.9 trillion dollars. Let’s say we were to wipe them out and leave each with a paltry 1 billion dollars. Then we divide their assets amongst every American who lives below the poverty line. That would give every single person in poverty slightly over $50K. Could you imagine? You still have 25 billionaires, but now 37.9 million don’t have to figure out whether they’re eating or paying their bills for a while. That’s what means.

27 minutes into the new year & Canada's 100 highest-paid CEOs have already earned the average worker's annual salary, according to a report from Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) carried on CBC.

CBC then cuts to Fraser Institute dude who says reports like this are "apples & oranges" because they fail to include other forms of average worker employee compensation like flexible hours. 🤣

I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.

It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second , a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.

We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a 's window every time they think of it.

Say it with me folks, inheritance tax.

We are entering into "the great wealth transfer" where about $5.2 trillion (that's the one with more zeros than I can count) is about to pass from the, largely undeserving, super rich to their entirely undeserving heirs.

"Research by Forbes magazine found there were 15 billionaires aged 30 or under but that none had created their own wealth, instead benefitting from huge inheritances."

Man who is married to a multi billionaire says he will make those who are on benefits and disabled pay for the tax cuts he wants to bribe the electorate with before an election.

He fails to acknowledge impact of years of his party’s austerity on people’s incomes and mental health (most benefit claimants are in work) and there has been a pandemic that has massively impacted the long term health of those aged 50+.

By refusing to tax corporations, and refusing to raise the cap on income that is taxable for Social Security, the republicans are purposefully trying to bankrupt the US.

Corporate taxes should be at least as much as individual income taxes, if not moreso.

And there is absolutely no excuse for cutting social safety net programs when corporations clearly are not paying anywhere near their fair share of taxes. Not even close.

It's a scam.

People can’t even grasp the concept of a billionaire. It just feels “rich” to them. But put it in terms of time:

1 million seconds is 12 days
1 billion seconds is 32 years

That’s what an obscene amount of money a billion dollars is.

Seeing a comment about Poilievre's $1725 per ticket fundraiser made me wonder how much of the CPC income is not received as tax-deductible political contributions (which are subject to limits) but instead as tax-deductible business or self-employment expenses (which are not).

This strikes me as a pretty massive loophole in our political funding rules.

And yes, I know that technically our Income Tax rules would not permit the expensing of these tickets, but fraud happens.

Markets - Where did all the stocks go?
Public Companies In Decline

The number of public companies has fallen fast by Matt Phillips, David Crowther 4/28/24

"...After analyzing the effects of mergers, private-equity investment, and regulatory costs, the paper suggests that M&A is the main culprit. (Though they do theorize that higher costs associated with regulation could be a less important contributing factor.)

“Mergers seem to be the biggest driver of this trend,” Ali Sanati told Sherwood. Sanati is a finance professor at the American University in Washington, DC, and a coauthor of the 2023 paper.

The authors categorized mergers according to various financial metrics, noting that mergers motivated around financing and innovation “are the ones that effectively reduce the number of U.S. listings.”

So, they got eaten.
