So, someone at #Meta, named Rachel, contacted @kev about having a hush talk. And now there's a screenshot of the message. What can we learn/infer from it?
There are some who want to allow #Facebook to join the Fediverse, on the basis that we'll see how they behave, and then we can always block them if they break our rules.
That makes as much sense to me as watching someone commit a murder outside your house, and then letting them into your home, still carrying the murder weapon, to see how they behave. If they hurt us, we can always close the door later.
They've already broken our rules. Why wait until they hurt us again?
Facebook is a corporation founded on abuse of data. It's in the company DNA. They've subverted democracy and abused people's human rights. Even if Zuck had an epiphany tomorrow and decided to no longer be a creep, do you think Facebook can change? Do you think the shareholders, the customers, the government agencies that rely on it being as it is would allow that?
In retrospect, I shouldn't have bothered writing an article regarding #defederation, the #fedipact and the #fediverse because this brilliant gem (back from the 'Endless September' Usenet days) says everything I want to say and then some. Everything old is new again, the same tribalism and existential fears remain. We are creatures of short memories and strong, deeply-felt fears.
A major fedi split is coming, ties broken in people's personal social graphs. It is as it is.
At @SocialCoop a large and reasoned #Loomio discussion is underway. It is great to see the level of involvement that #SocialCoop governance policies bring to its fedizens.
Yet, depending on outcome people will have to make personal decisions. Where they are in the upcoming #BigRift
Hi everyone, aus.social has signed the #FediPact to block Facebook/Meta.
While we don't yet know the nature of Facebook's fediverse gambit, blocking them is not a difficult decision for us to make.

Addendum from @aussocialadmin :
We've signed the pact (in solidarity) due to our discomfort with Meta's announcement of joining the fediverse.
There is a lot of gossip and it's unknown what Meta's plans will ultimately become - I'm waiting for the boring technical details to land before we respond with any kind of action... and we can focus on that when the moment comes.
To all the #Meta defenders maintaining that the corporation formerly known as #Facebook is not genocidal, it just happens to have such catastrophic privacy and moderation failures that happen to enable genocide, a friendly reminder that the purpose of a system is what it does.
Yes, I'll be happy for a well-founded excuse to block meta-servers. However objectively i don't see what more of the already public information in the fediverse they'd gather just from federating – which they could already do and get without their official project (which i think isnt actually that official yet).
Also it reads that they'll federate in whitelist mode and have nda's with affected admins.
Lets just see what is going to happen and decide when it's time. This time with the #tchncs
@milan While I can see this would be wise when dealing with a barely known entity, I don't understand what's there to be waited for when dealing with #Meta.
Their track record, for more than a decade, is open to see for everybody. And it is abominable.
Whatever happens, thank you for being a friendly and approachable admin during my time here. Currently being on vacation, upon my return my accounts will be on an instance that is part of the #Fedipact. I hope it'll be social.tchncs.de
For admins and mods interested in #FediPact I set up @fedipact - you could follow it from your server admin account as a way to show your interest in, or support of, the idea. (if the account has indicated anything about it, that could be seen)
There's no quality control on this one but it could be helpful for fedipact.online or generally indicating support while not yet on the page.
Why Defederate Meta?
