Amalivaca is a well-known legend coming from the #Amerindian people of #Guyana, St. America.
Amalivaca means: child of my searching. The story is beautifully retold by one of our finest writers, Jan Carew. There are so many #rainforest stories based in Guyana, I wish the whole world could read them:
Haha, rad! A woman in Guyana used @terraso's story maps feature to document a motorcycle trip across the landscape.
I love this. Often in the nonprofit sector we (I) get really clinical describing my community's environment. Telling an actual narrative (road trip!) is a great way to communicate the wonderful things about a place and its people.

"#Guyana holds the sixth-largest #oil reserves in the Americas and the nineteenth largest in the world. With high quality product, below average production costs, and low local consumption, the reserves have enormous export potential—per capita, Guyana has quickly become the highest producer of oil in the world... The oil discovery has reignited longstanding imperial tensions and introduced new ones"

It's #BlackHistoryMonth, and in 2024 I'm reflecting on the fact that although I've known about Walter Rodney and his seminal work "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" for years, it wasn't until I started reading it last year that I found out that Rodney was assassinated by his own Guyanese government in a car bombing. He was 38.
I'm obligated to point out to fellow white people, in case you missed it, the trend of white people lionizing a heroic Black person in a show of solidarity while studiously ignoring the vicious violence enacted against that person by the powers that be.
Also, Rodney was banned from Jamaica and from his teaching position at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. This caused protests that escalated to riots in Kingston in 1968. Part of the wave of protests that swept the world from that year to the next.

Indigenous citizens of Guyana and Venezuela must lead a challenge together against the idea of a border dispute. As the first “American” victims of European expansion, Indigenous “Americans” have an opportunity, and obligation, to lead the resistance against war, European expansion and resource seizure in the Americas as part of a global, intentional, reconnection of all indigenous peoples hemmed-in by borders drawn by European settlers.
Maybe, our logic was “they created the problem, let them solve it”, That logic is wrong. US troops at the border escalate the problem. A decision from the International Court of Justice will not end this conflict for us because the responsible parties are not in court. Until then, we continue as surrogates of the empires and at risk of becoming another front in their 500-year war.
