28 May Do you have advice for other authors that you haven't heard from different sources?

This is what I was told by my best friend in the whole wide world when I was talking about what other writers have done: “Never compare yourself to others.”

Best advice ever. ❤️

Amalivaca is a well-known legend coming from the #Amerindian people of #Guyana, St. America.

Amalivaca means: child of my searching. The story is beautifully retold by one of our finest writers, Jan Carew. There are so many #rainforest stories based in Guyana, I wish the whole world could read them:

May 17. Other than writing, what's your go-to creative outlet?

Music, esp. singing and dancing, and drawing.

I'm not good at any of these, but I love all of them, and they relax me.

Hello Authors of Masto?

Short story collections. Strong theme, or just the best stories? Can a collection include nightmares and light-hearted stuff? (An experienced author says a good collection does not vary wildly in tone. But my stuff does).

what do you think as a reader, and what do you do yourself?

Any person can explain something to me, please?

My nephew gave my mother his phone to use, I got her a new SIM card. She has the same old carrier, same number.

Why does the phone show this message? I checked settings / general / about…the carrier is installed in the phone, I see the SIM card number there too. Can anyone explain? Please?

I think about it often, what if we could be our most creative every day?

Here’s an interesting essay I’m reading (again) about it:

“Being creative is an innate human quality; your creative self can’t disappear. It can be neglected of nourishment…Your creative self may have retreated into the dark, it may be hard to see its outlines or to discern its movements, but it is there.”

Short Stories.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, somewhere in the middle?

Years ago one of my dear friends (who is a huge bookworm) and I were talking. She told me she hated short stories. I can’t remember why or if she even told me a reason. This conversation has stuck with me, because I struggle with them- why? I have no idea. I have tried different tactics to overcome this. I am s l o w l y reading one now, but I don’t gravitate toward it (not the one pictured, but it’s one I really want to read if I can ever get there).

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

"Slaveowners sexually assaulted and abused their women slaves—and demanded reproduction from them. Rape was used as a tool to both force the women into submission and increase the profit of slaveholders through breeding. The slaves did their best to resist and rebel against such violence, while white women failed to oppose the gruesome behavior perpetrated by their husbands."

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

@bookstodon

neenamaiya,
@neenamaiya@mstdn.social avatar

@skaeth @bookstodon Some books I struggle with heavily, but I force myself to read to the end. Then I think about what I’ve read, and what the writer is trying to say. Usually, I end up being glad I finished reading the book. There’s only one book that I absolutely hhhhhate, and feel it was a total waste of time. It was a highly popular book.
