I've taken out a VPS from Ionos (formerly 1and1). It has 1 vCore, 1 GB RAM, 10GB SSD, unlimited traffic, root access, and a choice of distros, including Debian, Ubuntu & CentOS. Plesk is also offered free, but, I've not used it.

All for the ridiculously cheap price of £1 (£1.20 incl. VAT) per month. At this price it would be rude not to test it, which is what I'm doing.

The spec is limited, but, I can think of hundreds of uses at this price point.

What's the best place to host a single page client-side app in 2023 on one's own domain with SSL?

Is the answer still “GitHub Pages”, or is there something better?

None of the officially listed (German/European) hosters publicly just admits to the version of Nextcloud they're running or what their adoption goal is.

I love .de, but they're also still on v25 - v26 was released in March (with v26.0.3 2 weeks ago), and v27 three weeks ago.

For reasons, I have to probably close down my home-lab during for a few weeks/months this fall.

Does anyone have any recommendation to what provide I might move my workloads?

They consist of:

  • One small kuberenetes cluster
  • Web and database servers
  • matrix-synapse server
  • other various servers

Is Hetzner still the "go to" provider?
The only thing that I need is an european (preferably swedish) provider, and is nice to the wallet.

In the light of renewed conversations about Meta and Threads, I would like to remind everyone that it is now easier than ever to run your own fediverse community, without having to worry about setting up and maintaining your own server.

https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/lessons-learned-from-running-a-single-person-mastodon-instance/#hosting

This will help make the fediverse stronger, more resilient, and more diverse.

And we won't have to fight so much about which instance should federate with whom.

Apparently it's now a thing for dinner party hosts to ask their guests for money to help with groceries. Eater reporter Amy McCarthy says that's not OK, and offers some suggestions for cutting costs if you want to host but can't afford to. What's your experience with this? Pick as many answers as apply and share any fun stories in the comments.

I need help with finding free website hosting. I am writing a blog post about how to get started with a personal blog and a custom domain.

My requriements are:

  • Free
  • Must be able to use a custom domain
  • Does not require git

I have tried codeberg pages, gitlab, github and netlify for static sites and they work for me. But I want it to be easy for people without dev skills.

None of the providers in this article worked:

Do you know any hosting providers that:

  1. Can host static html/css/javascript/image files that do not require git? (So no to gitlab/github/codeberg pages)
  2. I can connect with my domain name (foo.bitar.se)
  3. Is free

?

The closest I know is alwaysdata.net where one can get 100 MB storage. But there I can't connect with my domain name.

Please boost! :)

Merci d'avance ! ❤️

Ok, I'm embarrassed to admit this. I've run at least one server of my own for two decades and the user agent data in my server log files still perplex me.

Take this for instance:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/119.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

Is this just a very complex way of saying the user agent was an old version of Chrome on a Windows 10 machine that was rendered with Safari/Webkit version 537.36?

hm question here:

Is this normal uptime for a shared-hardware VPS? https://sirtaptap.com allegedly goes down for ~5 minutes about once a week. Not critical, and hey, I'm only paying ~$150 a year for it, but between Cloudflare and moderate traffic, I wouldn't expect almost any downtime.

The downtimes have been short and random enough I've never been able to confirm them manually, all reported by .

As a someone in the #tech and development space, my peers have always shunned #Wordpress and I have to admit I also steered clear from it simply because I judged it to be a weak, drag-and-drop solution and closed ecosystem.

But I strongly believe my hatred for it has been unfair and without any cause all these years. The fact that it is so popular shows that it is a valid solution, and without it, millions of blogs and small business websites would never have been possible. It is also far less closed and locked in as many of these other solutions Youtube creators often advertise as you can #selfhost it as well.

What is your opinion on it? Do you use it, and what do you use it for? What do you like and not like, and finally, what level of technical skills do you have? Are you a developer or a non-tech-savvy person who found the perfect solution for your website, blog, or e-commerce store?

I hate discord for ever allowing the term “server” for what’s essentially another space on a server that’s still basically owned and controlled by them and @matrix got it right. I have an actual server, I have a space with rooms on that server. I really hope this improves to the point we can take over discord because I would love to move on from that.

Please boost for a wider cast.

Looking like I’m going to have to bail on my current web hosting service because they renew at too steep a price than I can afford for a little blog site and two domains.

I keep seeing HostGator, inmotion and DreamHost show up as well-rated sites with really affordable (introduction) packages.

Does anyone have any experience with any of those services? Good/bad/ugly?
