The United Nations’ top court opens two days of hearings into a request from South Africa to press Israel to halt its military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than half of Gaza’s population has sought shelter
“At the time in 1948, there was no television. People did not have smartphones, and it was relatively easy to cover up the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing, and to claim that it didn’t exist,” the Israeli historian told Al Jazeera.
More oral submissions at the ICJ this week, after South Africa requested provisional measures. Not clear whether Egypt and/or the Maldives will be taking part, after they joined the application.
#FarhanHaq, a #UN spokesperson, said the new smaller numbers reflected those bodies which had been fully identified. The bigger figures included corpses for whom identification has so far not been completed.

Egypt, as "the cornerstone of Israel's standing in the Middle East" since 1979, joining South Africa's case is a "real diplomatic punch. Israel would have to take it very seriously".

Egypt to join South Africa’s ICJ genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Egypt says the move is due to the worsening severity & scope of Israeli attacks against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
However, Egypt has repeatedly warned Israel that Israel's military operations along the Egypt-Gaza border could endanger the peace treaty between the two.
