Henry Goddard (1866 - 1957) invented the pseudonym for Deborah, one of his patients at the the Vineland Training School for Feeble-minded Boys & Girls. He wrote a book about her family called "The Kallikak Family: A Study in the Heredity of Feeble-Mindedness." In it, he claimed that Deborah was descended from 5 generations of fuckups because her ancestor, Martin, fucked a "feeble-minded" woman. Martin also married a non-feeble-minded woman and had kids with her, and those kids were all fine. No criminals, layabouts, or licentious behavior.
Of course, Goddard made up most of the "scholarship" behind his assertions too, and within a decade was repudiating the results of his own study.
The book was an enormous hit. People generally ignored Goddard's repudiation.
