Windows has long not been a sensible choice for advertising, museum or other displays... excellent example attached. Why can't they just leave machines alone or show something small and nonintrusive.

Officially ditched VS Code for Brackets (https://brackets.io). I like it a ton better and it's not Microsoft. Win win.

Switched to LibreOffice (https://libreoffice.org) too. Uninstalled Windows Office since they want to charge monthly for Excel and Word (seriously).

I'm sick of corporations and their crap. More open source, less of everything else.

I don't understand how start menu is so buggy. Click start, type in expecting it to search, nothing happens. Click away, click start, type, nothing happens. Click away, Click start, type away and it works. It is so regular across so many computers I can't imagine it's just me having that infuriating experience.

CenturyAvocado,
@CenturyAvocado@fosstodon.org avatar

@proactiveservices not sure if I use that. Project codewords and the plethora of environments makes me lose track of what is used.
I'm on and whatever it uses for the equivalent of the start menu search seems reliable though maybe once a week it doesn't take focus and I have to click into the search box.

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@CenturyAvocado thankfully the start menu is mostly reliable here, but the odd time it isn't does infuriate me, despite it being such a tiny bug.

Fresh hell..

"Bing Chat" bullshit delivered via Windows Update hung the Explorer load on a computer used for playout of music at a radio station. Just resulted in a black screen after the windows splash. THANKS!

Modern computing is such a terrible experience.
Windows is increasingly morphing into an advert delivery platform.

@starfrost It really annoys me that they feel it ok to push this rather than it being opt in.

This disaster resulted in a support call from a business at 3.30am last night as one of their business critical machines was just doing a black screen on boot.
It's unforgivable are doing this and, in some setups, doing it in such a way the computer fails to start up. I don't want Bing Chat, don't install it via windows update automatically!

22 years ago on October 25, 2001, Windows XP was released.

Windows XP brought a fresh, user-friendly interface with its iconic green hills and blue sky wallpaper. It was a significant improvement over its predecessors.

Even after its official end-of-life in 2014, it remained in use due to its reliability and familiarity

Dtl,

@SinclairSpeccy still in use for a lot of scientific equipment, because drivers were written for it, and never updated. Same with Windows 7.

14 years ago on October 22, 2009, Microsoft released Windows 7 to the public.

Windows 7 was celebrated for its improved performance, stability, and user-friendly interface. It addressed many of the concerns and criticisms that arose from Windows Vista.

Some of Windows 7's features includes support for virtual hard disks, support for additional file formats and improved performance on multi-core processors

“If you’ve previously upgraded a machine from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 11 or used one of these older keys, your activation status won’t change. You have a digital license that should continue to work. But if you were hoping to use this loophole in the future, it’s time to buy a legit Windows 11 key instead.”

Hika,
@Hika@mastodon.social avatar

@richygarcia84 Oh snap so any old computer that made it through the loophole should just connect with a microsoft account? Kinda insane... all right. But what I meant is my laptop is so old it can barely run win10, win11 might kill it haha!

richygarcia84,
@richygarcia84@mstdn.games avatar

@Hika Yes. That 7 Key, once verified by the activation servers becomes a W10 key which in turn becomes a W11 key.

PSA: You can no longer use CD Keys to activate Windows 10 & 11. HOWEVER, upgrades from Windows 10 to Windows 11 are still free.

On this day in tech history, Microsoft introduced Windows NT 3.5.

Windows NT 3.5 introduced improved networking capabilities and enhanced performance such as integrated Winsock and TCP/IP support, support for the VFAT file system, Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) version 2.0 and support for input/output completion ports
