The activism instance has shut down due to payment cancelled from lack of funds. We received no direct donations for this instance for the last year on or and funds were far beyond exorsted.

We would like to restart the instance based on a different codebase if donations could cover the ongoing costs of servers and hosting

Our culture is currently not strong anufe to support alt media hosting or production.

The state of Georgia has indicted over 60 protesters on organized crime and racketeering charges over their involvement in the movement to stop the construction of a $90 million police training facility in Atlanta that opponents have dubbed “Cop City.”

...

RICO charges can result in a fine or a five to 20 year prison sentence in Georgia.

I am stepping back from the project with immediate effect.

I discovered severe lapses in how the Tusky project's donations (received via ) were being handled. When I reported those to the project's private "Tusky Contributors" Matrix channel the financial admins tone policed the feedback, refused to engage with the concerns I and others raised, and demanded the discussion be stopped.

There is too much detail for a thread, so please read https://write.as/nikclayton/stepping-back-from-the-tusky-project.

This week's donation went to the OpenAndroidInstaller project. It allows for easy install of various deGoogled Android operating systems to mobile phones. For instance on my Pixel 2 it was as simple as a dozen or so mouse clicks and downloading two files to get Android replaced by LineageOS. There weas no use of a temrinal required for the install and this will really help non tech saavy people get free of Android as well as save time for those who are tech saavy. There are over 60 devices supported at this time. The project code is licensed using GPLv3.0.

The main website for the project is here:

https://openandroidinstaller.org/

The source code is on Github:

https://github.com/openandroidinstaller-dev/openandroidinstaller

The project has a presense on Mastodon:

If you wish to help the project financially with a donation you can do so through Open Collective and Github:

Is there a standard suggested Donation Tiers chart for Open Source projects? Like, how much money should be donated in order to get a shout out on social media, or to get free stickers, etc?

Hey there friends! I finally created a way to receive contributions ($$) toward the server hosting costs for our instance (toot.bldrweb.org). Please check out the page for all the details:

https://opencollective.com/bldrweb

The About section has all the (imagined) FAQs, but please leave a comment below or message me if you have other questions/concerns/comments.

Boosts appreciated!

Rather than requests for donations, what would make me more likely to chip in would be basic cost per user figures for my instance. Anyone know instances out there that are transparent about that stuff?

Hey, once again, I welcome the newcomers. It's great to see new faces here :) It seems that we've managed to resolve the server issue. Unfortunately, I had to temporarily disable certain features, such as content auto-refresh. It will be restored at the beginning of next week after the infrastructure change, so you'll get to...

Sad news that groups may close due to a lack of funding.
:mastodon_oops:

I expect that's an issue that admins of other spaces may also need to address as the grows in popularity.

Does anyone have any helpful funding advice?

Stumbled upon Open Collective a couple of times recently.

"Raise and spend money with full transparency."
https://opencollective.com/

"Open Collective is a legal and financial toolbox for grassroots groups. It’s a fundraising + legal status + money management platform for your community. What do you want to do?"

@brentsimmons Re «file with the state of Washington, set up a bank account, start keeping track of income and expenses, separate NetNewsWire stuff from my stuff, start paying taxes», all of this can be avoided by using . Excess funds can also be donated to other projects.

Doesn't change your overall conclusion, but seemed worth mentioning.
