Fuck QR codes! I went to the DMV this morning, and they've replaced their 'take a number' check-in system with a giant QR code poster. I told them my phone doesn't do those, so they had to check me in manually. I've never once used those damned things and I'm not about to start now. 🤬
From the tusky app I go to three dots, share link to post. In the options it pops up I choose "create QR code". This then displays a full screen #qrcode that the other person scans with their phone.
So far this has been 100% successful with pretty much everybody, shows the post, no login and I think helps normalize mastodon to more of my local IRL community.
Tired of shitty “free” #QRcode generators adding aggressive watermarks, trying to upsell you on signing up for an account, or paid services. They also might be collecting the links passed in. I’m planning to add built in QR generation to the next update to Opener!
Messing around with QR codes again; here are some empty version 4 error level M examples I posted on the birdshite some time back. No mask, then masks 1 through 8. #nerd#qrcode
So apparently the barcode is getting an upgrade in 2027.
"The EAN/UPC barcode [...] has offered price lookup functionality for decades. However, it’s no longer keeping up with today’s growing demands [...] In response, the global supply chain is moving toward two-dimensional (2D) barcodes that can carry more information."
The growing abuse of QR codes in malware and payment scams prompts FTC warning
The US Federal Trade Commission has become the latest organization to warn against the growing use of QR codes in scams that attempt to take control of smartphones, make fraudulent charges, or obtain personal information.
@arstechnica For anyone who uses Android phones I strongly recommend installing the SECUSO QR Scanner app.
Firstly and foremost it's privacy friendly, so doesn't leak any information about what you're scanning. And it's open source.
But also it never ever blindly follows a link. Every QR code scanned is shown to the user as text, and if it's a URL then you have to confirm that it looks safe & correct before the app will launch the browser.
