Despite promises of reform, exploitation remains endemic in India’s sandstone industry, with children doing dangerous work for low pay – often to decorate driveways and gardens thousands of miles away.
A Kiva, with its original roof, tucked up under a cliff overhang in a small canyon (10/22/2018). The use of Kivas by ancient cliff dwellers is unknown. However, modern Hopi use Kivas for spiritual ceremonies.
Ideally I would have liked to get a better angle on this, but as I was stood on a very narrow ledge 15 foot up a cliff all I could do was hold the camera out at arms length and hope for the best
Glasgow's red sandstone buildings really glow when they catch the low winter sun. You might not believe it, but this picture of the 1903 Kingston Public Halls on Paisley Road, which was taken late yesterday afternoon, is completely unfiltered and unedited, other than a bit of cropping.
This Buddha statue is crafted from durable sandstone and showcases the Namaskar Mudra, which symbolizes humility and unity through clasped hands at the chest.
Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (5/13/2023). Monument Valley is part of the Colorado Plateau a geomorphic province of buttes, mesas, volcanoes, deep canyons, & stunning rock colors. Reds & oranges predominate in the geology of the region due to oxidation of the iron rich rocks. There are also numerous fossils, petrified forests, & enumerable cultural sites within the ~336,700km^2 province.
Throwback to one of my favorite pictures I've ever taken. My wife (fiancée at the time) sitting inside Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, Utah. Taken 12th June 2008 with a Canon Digital Rebel XTi.
For #MeerMittwoch with some eye candy for geology fans too, this is Nanya, a scenic viewpoint considered a natural garden to the people of Taiwan, located along the coast from Keelung on the north of the island country. The rock is sandstone and many of the weathered formations around here have attracted names as a result.
I encountered this 4x3x3 foot boulder along a mostly #sandstone (?) cliff face at #ChacoCanyon. No others like it nearby. Am I seeing mostly fossil shells end on? Thanks!
Differential erosion on a red sandstone mask on the Trustees Savings Bank in Springburn.
The lines across this scultpture are created by layers of different composition and hardness within the 270 million year old sandstone, which means they weather at different rates. In this case, the effect is quite striking.
Last week, we had a day trip to #Torquay but rather than drive or take the train, we decided on a different route. The first leg was a #cycle trip to #Exmouth, about 17 km, followed by a boat trip around the #Devon#coast. The weather was a bit changeable but there were only prospects of short showers.
The first part of the #coast travelling #west is primarily #sandstone with its distinctive orange colour. You can see the layers tilted through geological action. #Erosion is always evident at the surface but on the action is the sea. The rocks are dated at about 250 million years.
We had a #cycletrip to #BudleighSalterton today, which is a nice round trip of 48 km. It was a pleasant day, not too hot and with a refreshing breeze. Those of you in the know will be glad that I wore shorts and so my pump could not get stuck in my trouser leg.
The #beach is made of pebbles of various sizes ranging from the size 15-20 cm down to less than a centimetre. The colours vary from #purple and #pink to #grey and #blue.
Rocher de Mutzig is the highest mountain in the Northern #Vosges near Strasbourg in the Eastern part of France. At 1000 meters altitude, there’s a rock made of pink #sandstone sculpted by #erosion. It's one of my favorite places.
