On this day, in 1928, Josh Kirby was born. Many fans hold the iconic book covers Josh designed for the Discworld series close to their hearts. Which Kirby cover is your favourite and why?
40 years ago today, it was revealed that the world is flat, and carried through space on the backs of four giant elephants named Tubul, Jerakeen, Berilia and Great T'Phon, who in turn stand on the back of Great A'Tuin, the star turtle.
Happy Birthday Discworld, and happy publication day to The Colour of Magic
On this day, in 1983, The Colour of Magic was published and the Discworld was unleashed on the Roundworld! What is your favourite thing about the Discworld and/or the best thing being a fan of the Discworld has done for you?
"The Worlds of Terry Pratchett" — a discussion with Rob Wilkins and Neil Gaiman about Terry #Pratchett.
A really worthwhile listen, especially if you are a Pratchett-enjoyer. There’s also some lovely chat about collaborative writing and some moving insights into a unique writer.
New #TerryPratchett story collection, published posthumously, is charming and upbeat, but each tale is frustratingly short for its fun magical premise. Set in small-town UK, not Discworld.
In case you forgot or have never heard it, @neilhimself has, hands down, the best #terrypratchett story I have ever heard. I was even priveliged to hear him tell it in person in 2022.
Listening to Carpe Jugulum (again). I forgot how much I laugh at the things Nanny Ogg comes out with, making it less than ideal for a bedtime audiobook 😅
“Repent!’” Nanny Ogg went on. “Repent? Me? Cheek! I can’t start repenting at my time of life. I’d never get any work done. Anyway,” she added, “I ain’t sorry for most of it.”
With very kind permission from the Terry Pratchett Estate, I am immeasurable grateful to be able to present him to you!
Handmade crochet Rob Anybody.
He is completely unique and stands at 7” tall (eight with his hair!)
He is a collector’s item for display only and therefore suitable for persons over the age of 14.
He will be up grabs in this year’s art auction in aid of the South Essex Wildlife Hospital ♥️ #discworld#terrypratchett#art#crochet#handmade
He’s coming along nicely. The only fabric that I was happy with for his clothes was sadly still part of a shirt belonging to my husband. Being a good sport he has parted with it for me 😁 I’m now dyeing it with coffee to make the perfect colour. Tomorrow will be spent sewing. #discworld#terrypratchett#handmade#crochet#art
Mourning Granny Weatherwax ~ There are any number of quotes from Terry Pratchett’s books that moved me and shaped the way I thought of the world. But the one I always come back to, the one that shaped my magical practice – that was Granny Weatherwax.
"One of the main themes – perhaps the main theme – of Pratchett’s huge body of work is that ultimately your life is your own; that no one can tell you what to think or who to be. There is a burning fury at injustice at the heart of his best writing, and it’s always fuelled by the policing of someone else’s agency. The very worst sin, as Granny Weatherwax herself says in 1999’s Carpe Jugulum, is to 'treat people like things'."
"Making Money and Terry’s prediction of the banking crash is always held up as one of the great examples of how he predicted the future, but I actually believe that it had more to do with his ability to read and predict the human condition and our own ghastly ability to continually cock things up."
#FirstThoughs are the everyday thoughts. Everyone has those. #SecondThoughts are the thoughts you think about the way you think. People who enjoy thinking have those. #ThirdThoughts are thoughts that watch the world and think all by themselves. They’re rare, and often troublesome. #Listening to them is part of #witchcraft
@Hawkmoon "Lord Vetinary was very much in favour of 'one man, one vote'. He was the one man, and he had the vote". Probably badly mis-quoted of course! #TerryPratchett
Firstly. I'm deeply disappointed in my culture's inability to think outside the urn. This is a perfect idea, and really does put the fun into funerary practice.
Secondly, that #discworld author #TerryPratchett could have made a killing selling death themed hour glasses with intricately carved death with kindly eyes holding your loved one's mortal sand. Perhaps a grim squeaker smaller version for pets etc
It's National Hermit Day! Which book starts with a hermit (of sorts) dying and realising he'd never quite gotten around to training an apprentice and why was this a bad thing?
