The search for a slim, fast and modern browser might have come to an end. Ungoogled-chromium feels just like what I want. Even better than Vivaldi. But the setup process is a bit more nerdy.
Chromium update fixes 5th zero-day exploit for 2024
In Google's release notes for the latest Chromium 124.0.6367.201 source code it is mentioned that this release fixes a zero-day vulnerability. Beware: this is already the 5th zero-day which was reported and fixed in Chromium in 2024.
This vulnerability is already actively exploited in the wi
PSA to everyone to not use brave browser @brave, the CEO of Brave Software is bigoted (donated to anti-lgbtqia+ organizations trying to ban gay marriage in the past and still has never addressed it or apologized) and was also against the Covid Lockdowns and is anti-vax. Using brave browser contributes to oppression of LGBTQIA+ ppl and contributes to brave software financially through ads and other means.
I recommend anyone still using brave browser to switch to ungoogled-chromium as a non-bigoted degoogled chromium-based browser alternative. @floccus is a good browser extension to use on ungoogled-chromium to sync your bookmarks.
@Vivaldi yep I back up my bookmarks physically every 4 days too. Plus import them to all browsers I have installed on the Mac. (In total I therefore have them in #Safari, #Brave, #Vivaldi, #Ungoogled, #Librewolf, #Firefox). Paranoid much about losing them. 😉
It has already been possible to change an #iPhone's default web browser through the "Settings" app since iOS 14.
#Apple has a March 6 legal deadline to introduce app sideloading in the European Union in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act #DMA, and iOS 17.4 will add support for this. #Sideloading will allow Apple users to download apps outside of the App Store, but the change will be limited to customers in the EU.
Now is an opportunity to improve your web experience… and your safety…
• unmigrated accounts on legacy browser—such as #Safari
• pro liaison on a browser approved by your organization
• consuming, online streaming, on the all-purpose browser: #Firefox (then Settings > Privacy)
• social media on a speedy browser—such as #unGoogled (but you must update)
• online banking, health, sysadmin & sensitive stuff on a hardened browser—such as #LibreWolf or #Mullvad's browser
I wanted a PDF reader for the holiday season (and beyond), so that I don't have to use a laptop to read the #Psion SIBO C SDK. So I've resurrected this old Fire 7 (Ford) tablet. 8GB flash is just enough!
Yesterday I discovered #Obtainium, an #Android app that can monitor various sources for APKs, including GitHub, GitLab, F-Droid, and others.
It's ideal for my #Ungoogled (and un-Amazoned) Fire 7 2015 tablet. NewPipe always delayed on F-Droid, so I've taken to manually installing it from GitHub. This now gives me an "app store" to do it.
I've also got it to pull Firefox Focus from GitHub, as there's no equivalent package in F-Droid.
KTOWN: live ISO with Plasma6 Alpha. Also, chromium now supports HEVC/AC3 playback
I have uploaded a 5 GB ISO file containing a new KTOWN variant of Slackware Live. This is the KDE Plasma6 Alpha release. Play around with it and perhaps you will be able to contribute to an improved Beta by finding a
Chromium 118 (also ungoogled) is a security update
I uploaded new 64bit packages for Chromium 118.0.5993.70 (also the un-googled variant) for which the sources were released a few days ago. This first release in the 118 series addresses a critical vulnerability (CVE-2023-5218) so it's wise to upgrade.
As mentioned in a previous blog post,
You have surely noticed an increase in the frequency with which I am releasing new chromium and chromium-ungoogled packages. This is caused by a new release policy from Google, with an update every week and a bump in the major version (currently 117) every month.
I have tried keeping up with that schedule, but I am giving up.
Just yesterday I uploaded my packages for chromium and chromium-ungoogled to 117.0.5938.92. Only to discover right before heading to bed that there's a new security update available... Chromium 117.0.5938.132 fixes a zero-day vulnerability in libvpx (CVE-2023-5217) which is already actively exploit
@garpu I used to think that too, but now that I have to compile #chromium as well as its #ungoogled sibling, I look fondly at #libreoffice as it compiles into a package in roughly two hours. A chromium package compilation sets me back ten hours at least (did not measure exactly)...
Some recent package updates: chromium (-ungoogled), ffmpeg, handbrake, pipewire-jack
Chromium, regular and un-googled.
Google is speeding up its Chromium release cycle. Let's see if I can keep up since I also build the -ungoogled variant. The latest update is 116.0.5845.140 and addresses a vuln
So after wading into the debate yesterday based on an article written by @ploum (and posted by @dangillmor), and the larger #fedipact controversy, I decided to share a slightly more coherent version of my thoughts. I still think unnecessary #gatekeeping and preemptive #bans suck and will cause a helluva lot more damage to the protocol than Meta likely will, but as always, hope others who differ in their thoughts will engage in some healthy debate, and not just resort to calling me a troll for having a different opinion than them.
@privacat@onepict : that’s the very point why I use an #ungoogled phone, why I’m trying to be part of the #permacomputing community, why I’m arguing for #digitalminimalism, why I’m trying to shop as local as I can and to support small creators/local companies.
Your argument is a bit like the naive: "You feel the world is bad yet you live in the world, duh!"
Yet you argue than when we manage to create a small space without #Meta, we should welcome their invasion.
Und auch deshalb ist die Digitalisierung, die früher oder später unweigerlich auf eine Post-Privacy-Gesellschaft herausläuft, in erster Linie eine Dystopie:
"As abortion bans across the nation are implemented and enforced, law enforcement is turning to social media platforms to build cases to prosecute women seeking abortions or abortion-inducing medication – and online platforms like Google and Facebook are helping. "
