Is there an or community here? I've been using threads for that as it has a very active one

Mastodon is so broad and the federated model means I've basically only ever seen tech content since that's what I'm connected to

There are also various hashtag prompts like (daily)

12Jan- Do you support other writers? How?

Buy their stuff. Or, y'know, one of the many other ways to support writers without spending any money.

"What food would you serve your enemy?" you ask.

"Enemy is such a harsh word," Lea said. "I like to think that everyone could be at least an ally, if not a friend. You'll find I'm quite persuasive."

She approaches you, and walks her fingers up your arm. "What's your favorite food? We can start there. It's best to discuss sensitive matters on a full stomach."

You swallow hard. "I'm not hungry."

"Nonsense," she takes your hand and guides you to the table. "Come. I insist."

I'm putting together a Christmas list for my family. It's that time of year again. So... Send me some reading recommendations! Give me links to YOUR books, guys. I'm going to bookmark this and save it for later, so I can purchase stuff throughout the year as well. I want to support everyone.

I hope everyone will check out the comments, too. Let's all support and love one another and help each other when and where we can.

4Apr- Is there writing advice you used to follow but changed your mind?

As a novice writer, I took to heart lots of advice that I either no longer follow or have adapted to fit my writing style.

-Show don't tell: I show more, but still tell.
-Kill your darlings: Many survive.
-Chapter length should be consistent: Chapters are as long as they need to be.
-Avoid adverbs: It would be easier to remove my heart.

Advice is just one person's opinion on how to do something. You do you. 💚

14May- What role do other writers have in your writing life?

Well, that depends.

Sometimes as Inspiration and aspiration. Other times they offer encouragement and emotional support. Occasionally, there's a mutual interest in offering advice on technical aspects of the craft.

Those things aside, I admire every single writer. Writing is quite personal, and sharing it with the world takes a ridiculous amount of courage. You're all amazing. 💚

14May- What role do other writers have in your writing life?

A huge one. Brainstorming and crowdsourcing, beta reading, commiseration, cross-marketing, advice, etc. With more established writers, they've blurbed me and given me a leg up, which was invaluable.

28 Did your MCs have comfort objects they carried as a child?

For Freya's sixth birthday, her brother Lazarus wrote her a story about climbing the highest tree in the world and plucking a few stars from the sky while he was up there. He told her he stuck some of those stars in a peach pit so they could have a nap and gave it to her.

"If you're really quiet, you can hear the little star snore."

She believed him, and on a bad day, she can still hear it snore.

May — all the questions are in the thread below 😊

Start anytime, answer any questions you want, skip as many as you feel like. Use the #, talk to other writers and have fun!

The only rules: be respectful to others and use CWs (content warnings) when necessary.

Everyone is welcome to participate 🧡

Created by @BranwenOShea and me.

— this # is only to find questions. Don't use it in your answers. Use space (# WordWeaversQs) when sharing to keep it tidy 🙏

@BranwenOShea and I will choose a few to include and might edit them for brevity/clarity.

18: What kind of dragon would your MC be?

The kind who studies for their PPL and instrument flight rating, never flies without an airband scanner, GPS, and transponder, and stays well out of controlled airspace. Also spends a lot of time looking over their shoulder nervously and tries not to fly through clouds in air traffic corridors.

Remember: there are old dragons, and bold dragons, but in the age of 250 ton jet airliners flying at 500 mph there are no old, bold dragons!

Is there writing advice you used to follow but changed your mind?

When I first drafted my novel, it was all Show and no Tell. "Show, don't tell" is good advice generally, but it needs some qualifiers. Like, "don't tell too much all at once" or "don't tell more than is absolutely needed"

After my alpha reader pointed out that I'd written a screenplay instead of a novel, I realized successful novelists Tell all the time. They just know how to balance it against the Showing

Day 18 - What kind of dragon (behavior or looks) would your MC be?

Alfie would be very much an Elliot (from Pete's Dragon).

And John would like to point out that they already have a crocodile greataunt with a basilisk glare in the story, so they really don't need any dragon, thank you very much.

Alfie, brightening up: We've got a statue of St. George and the dragon in the maze at home.

John: Are you talking about the house with the sheep bone terrace?

Alfie, beaming: Yep ☺️

So, I'm traveling a lot over Pentecost and will have time on the train. I can't quite decide which project to tackle first.

Whadda you think?

Final check of the translation of #OdysseyToThePromisedLand so that it gets done?
Start translating #TheMindOnFire?
Edit #TimeCurves in which those books will feature?
Or screw it and just read the books of the author I rediscovered on Patreon yesterday?

26: In your story who's hiding (literally or metaphorically)?

Currently there's a pain-in-the-arse honey tongue hiding in plain sight and and making Alex's mood worse. There's also a Skilled who just wants to live a normal life. And then there's also Alex, who is continuing to do a fairly decent job of hiding certain feelings from himself.

4. Is there writing advice you used to follow but changed your mind?

I'm glad the whole 'show, don't tell' thing has died.

Showing is what cinema does. The omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of the narrator in written narrative does something no other form can do: tell us everything.

Also, no child asks 'Daddy, show me a story'

This is it, folkes! My debut novel has hit KS! Jump on over and check it out, back it for all you can afford, or at the very least, give this a boost. While you're there, mention you saw the link on in the comments and we can cross promote this platform!

A trashy tale of blood and betrayal, great summer reading with a bit of bite in the theme.
