Can we just take a moment to consider that , who for some reason are considered a collection of the “smartest guys in the room” didn’t take into account that you might have two different devices (six years apart) unlocked at the same time, and provided no way to distinguish between them when you want to files, because it doesn't display the device name.

tonyarnold,
@tonyarnold@mastodon.social avatar

@felyashono @metaning that's absolutely Apple's fault. The name is user controlled, so the UI should have affordances for further differentiation. There are numerous options here, including showing the model of the device if the preceding information is identical to another entity.

This is simplicity to the point of damaging the user experience.

metaning,
@metaning@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold @felyashono Yup, there’s not even a mouseover state, and that information USED to be displayed back around High Sierra.

Possibly some graphic designer thought it looked visually complex to show that detail, and Apple’s broken UI culture has coolaided this toxic idea that visual simplicity = ease of use.

Is there a recommended equivalent for PCs? I'm sick of having to mess about with opaque network file share settings and permissions and folder settings and UAC prompts and rebooting because account credentials were cached and unspecified error 80004005 every time I just want to move a couple of files from one to another once in a blue moon. Copying files to and from a USB flash drive shouldn't be the quicker option for two networked computers owned by me in the same house.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@timixretroplays croc or wormhole, but sending things over the internet if the two devices are literally sitting next to each other sucks. 😩
I hope you'll find a better solution.

@RememberUsAlways
That's correct. Until this year's round of the regular killing campaigns began, farm-destruction and rationing were compensated for by organizations the Israeli government is now claiming to be terrorists.

Once again, there would be no issue with food if it wasn't for Israeli government policy. We're not going to thank them for a token gesture of tossing some grain to the people they are literally starving on purpose.

War is brutal. Declare Jihad and find out why.

Or release the hostages and negotiate a truce.

But complaining about the conditions in a single war zone in 2024 is disgusting to me considering war and famine across the world and history.

I found a free and open source alternative to AirDrop called LocalSend! It works with Windows, macOS, Android, and even Linux! Join me as I test it on every platform and see if I can transfer a file to every platform using this app!

There should be an open, universal standard/specification like USB, WiFi or Bluetooth, but for wireless data transfer (basically AirDrop, but for everyone).

If this gets released, it should work on too otherwise it's pointless. I'm tired of hearing users complaining about their struggles to share files (mostly images) to users - which often requires cos I guess you could send pics uncompressed there (easily).

I respect the EU tryna open up or whatever but can they tackle first since 's efforts to implement this has either been non-existent or shitty af. All I know is there should be an easy way for devices regardless of platforms to share files wirelessly, reliably.

: "Security researchers warned Apple as early as 2019 about vulnerabilities in its AirDrop wireless sharing function that Chinese authorities claim they recently used to track down users of the feature, the researchers told CNN, in a case that experts say has sweeping implications for global privacy.

The Chinese government’s actions targeting a tool that Apple customers around the world use to share photos and documents — and Apple’s apparent inaction to address the flaws — revive longstanding concerns by US lawmakers and privacy advocates about Apple’s relationship with China and about authoritarian regimes’ ability to twist US tech products to their own ends.

AirDrop lets Apple users who are near each other share files using a proprietary mix of Bluetooth and other wireless connectivity without having to connect to the internet. The sharing feature has been used by pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong and the Chinese government has cracked down on the feature in response."
