I tried Tumblr’s tipping feature to document the experience before it gets removed.
• Low usage: took ~20 minutes to find a creator with it enabled
• On iOS, payment did not use Apple Pay. I had to type my name, postal code, credit card number, expiration, verification code.
• When trying to send a second tip, it remembered my name, currency, postal code, but not my credit card details.
• Prices in USD even tho I set SEK as currency
• Smallest tip option $1.99
If you’ve been scrolling TikTok recently and wondered why some videos are muted, it’s probably because of the an ongoing spat between the platform and Universal Music Group, which removed the music of all the label’s artists.
Today, the two struck a “multi-dimensional licensing agreement” that will allow music from UMG’s artists to be used as TikTok audio once more. TikTok is also promising protections with respect to generative AI, including “a commitment on TikTok’s part to remove AI-generated music and improve artist and songwriter attribution,” reports @CNET.
Maybe local newspapers are dying because they think fighting adblockers is a more worthwhile effort than figuring out how to use the Payment Request API for subscriptionless, one-time article access or using ad networks that do not rely on third-party tracking.
#SocialMedia#Creators#CreatorEconomy: "Over the years, several leaders in the creator economy have floated the idea of a creators’ union. In 2016, longtime YouTuber Hank Green tried building the Internet Creators Guild, but the idea came perhaps too early; the project lacked the funding and momentum to keep it running, so it shut down in 2019. Since then, with the rise of TikTok and the boom in social media usage during the pandemic, more and more people are making a living on the internet.
Now, Ezra Cooperstein, a veteran in the industry, is working on a project called creators.org, which is a non-profit aiming to act as a unified voice for creators. A similar group, the Creators Guild of America, launched in August. And in 2021, SAG-AFTRA opened up membership to creators, but the union won’t negotiate with brands; rather, this special agreement allows creators to qualify for benefits from the union, like health insurance. But none of these organizations has become popular enough to attract a big enough community of creators – at least not yet.
“It’s difficult to find common ground with everyone because everyone wants different things,” Williams said. “Depending on the type of creator you are, you might have different priorities.”
In the meantime, platforms can still make changes to better support their creators."
Cramming the state of the creator economy, the digital displacement in social platforms in the last year, the long sad history of micropayments failing, and how the Web Monetization W3C Web Platform Incubator Community Group will make them viable into 15 minutes might set a new slide-per-minute personal record for me.
I’m on track for 1 slide per 15 seconds which makes my ADHD brain very happy.

Who doesn't want to make money while they sleep? Content creators on YouTube, TikTok and Twitch are filming themselves while asleep and it's proving to be quite lucrative.

This is a "Big Boy" move by #Threads re #identity authenticity, especially in regards to the burgeoning #CreatorEconomy (where the next major battle for curators is about to break out).
A sobering analysis of the state of startups providing creator tools and services. Which is a proxy for how creators and the creator economy are doing (spoiler: not well).
On Monday, I shared how the Interledger Foundation hopes to support the economic development of the fediverse and its creator economy.
I believe Interledger’s federated, global payment network can help fediverse server operators sustain their work and help creators be supported by the fans who love them.
I go into more detail in the 15 minute presentation, but there is a blog post summary too.
I will be speaking about the fediverse and the creator economy on Monday. I’m super excited to share what I’ve been working on with the Interledger Foundation!
When the CEO of the company steals content directly from the people who are trying to support themselves by using said company's monetization tools, you need to GTFO
Okay, so the #CreatorEconomy is going great on the birdsite.
