@chrismessina,

I see rel=me based authenticity is working over here based on your cross-reference.

Question:
Is rel=me embedded in the conventional HTML published by https://threads.net? I ask because I can't find that when I view-source on https://threads.net/@chris .

kidehen,

@dontpanic @chrismessina ,

I see it now. I looked earlier using which has some strange caching behavior.

Repeating the process using a different browser, as I should have in the first place, confirms the placement of "me" attribute and value (one's profile doc url) pair in <head/>.

Now I need to see if @Mastodon is picking up my cross references en route to validation :)

kidehen,

@chrismessina @dontpanic @Mastodon,

Finally cracked it. Here's how.

Over here I was pointing to https://www.threads.net/@kidehen (which does resolve) rather than https://threads.net/@kidehen.

That was it, bar confusion introduced by caching in my particular instance.

This is a "Big Boy" move by re authenticity, especially in regards to the burgeoning (where the next major battle for curators is about to break out).

Who would have thunk?

https://fedidb.org/

This is the effect, and they haven't even unleashed their support yet.

@Mastodon failed to understand a opportunity regarding the broader due to its approach to the client-server aspect of ActivityPub. Basically, it is happy to take the "platform over federated network" view which puts a huge opportunity on a platter for re for galvanizing 3rd party developers.

kidehen,

@arinbasu1 @kainoa Does this platform support, or plan to support, the client-server protocol?

That's critical to the broader which is currently conflated with @Mastodon (which has made it crystal clear that client-server support isn't of any strategic importance).

kidehen,

@arinbasu1 ,

I am asking about the client-server rather than server-server variant of the protocol.

Do you know there’s an XMPP-enabled version of the Fediverse? Here’s an example of one such site:

https://mov.im/

Also, you can set up Friendica to work with XMPP. To wit:

Server admins can configure their ejabberd or prosody XMPP/Jabber servers to authenticate against the Friendica user database. If configured this way, every Friendica account is also a XMPP/Jabber account and can be used with any XMPP/Jabber client.

See also: https://wiki.friendi.ca/docs/chats

So XMPP is a totally valid protocol you can use with the Fediverse right now. As for why few people do this, I don’t know. Maybe they really do believe that Google “killed” XMPP—which is, in fact, untrue.

Why would Meta implement ActivityPub? 1½ reasons are compelling, another frequently mentioned one is not.

Blogged yesterday. So far, a bunch of nodding, no real disagreements. Still want your thoughts, particularly if you disagree or have something to add I missed.

https://reb00ted.org/tech/20230625-meta-why-activitypub/

kidehen,

@J12t "Embrace and extend is an entirely ineffective strategy if what you want to embrace and extend has only a tenth of the users you want “in just a few months”. It is not worth to embark on such a complex strategy if it only works for a month or two at best."

Yep!

kidehen,

@J12t "However: if that was goal, why would they implement standardized ActivityPub, as opposed to simply creating a (proprietary) API, like Meta has for its other products? It’s not like the cut-off Twitter app developers will require a standard API to come to Meta.."

They need support to engage developers, since they aren't implicitly trusted by said audience. Open standards offer an insurance policy against predatory behavior, when all is said and done 😀

kidehen,

@atomicpoet @dave @davew Yes it is, but my concern is that it too will stall. @Mastodon conflation is one major issue working against the .

Simple example:
client-server support is crucial to innovation, but it's difficult to pull that off when a majority of clients are hardwired to @Mastodon where there's no interest in that aspect of ActivityPub.

I've seen this movie so many times, and the outcome is predictable.

There is something elating, validating, empowering even, when some{one,thing} Big & Famous (seems to) adopts “underdog” tech. I know because I've been there, both as a user and as a developer. But because of that, and for having been burned already not once, not twice, but three times at least, I know what to look out for.
