On Saturday, February 3, a special public event to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Northridge earthquake will be held at California State University Northridge (CSUN). The event is organized with City of Los Angeles Councilman John Lee, the City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department, the Statewide California Earthquake Center, and many other partners to remember the lessons and losses of 1994 and to improve safety and resilience today.
PNNL guide to building homes to be more resistant to wildfires.
"The guides in this section of the Disaster Resistance tool will focus less on structural fires caused from within, by cooking, heating or electrical malfunctions, and more on the threat that comes from outside, the threat of wildfire to homes located in the WUI. These guides focus on measures builders and home owners can take to increase the home’s chances of surviving even without suppression activities by firefighters..."
My #Disasters and #Preparedness peeps, a real time question for you. I just discovered that my nearest NOAA #weather radio transmitter is out of service. I also just discovered we cen receive the next-nearest station. But there’s a flood warning in the service area of the station that’s currently down.
This seems bad. I can confirm the transmitter is down but not way or for how long.
Repeat >> PNNL: Creating a Cool Room for Extreme Heat Events
"Given the reality of global climate change and the increasing likelihood of extreme heat events, designing and retrofitting homes for resistance to extreme heat and power outages should be considered in all climates. Extending the "hours of safety" that a home can provide when air-conditioning is not available can be life-saving. However, it is not necessary for an entire home to be resistant to extreme heat. Instead, the design or retrofit can concentrate on just one room. "
FEMA:" The Emergency Manager Exchange (EMX) Program brings state, local, tribal and territorial emergency managers and government officials to Washington, D.C. to work with FEMA leadership on the development and implementation of policies and programs.... These are full-time, paid assignments and participants should expect to work 40 hours per week for FEMA. The exchange duration is 6 months between March and September 2024.

What happens when people are left to fend for themselves, as will increasingly be the case with #ClimateChange disasters: women step in. Well worth reading this. #Floods#disasters
"To minimize health and comfort effects related to extreme heat events, create a “cool room” or space within the home to shelter from extreme heat.
Select a room that can be closed off from the rest of the home, has minimal heat gain through windows, walls, or ceilings, and is large enough to shelter the home’s occupants during a heat wave.
Use shading, low solar heat gain coefficient windows, and other solar control techniques to reduce solar heat gain to the room.
Use insulation and air sealing to minimize heat gain through the walls and ceilings.
