Exercised part of my personal disaster preparedness plans; i.e. the "relocate the pets" part of the plan. The rabbit part took a significant amount of work. Dogs are much easier, especially if you have the crate trained. Rabbits... not so much. Would not have worked in a wildfire evac, not without significant stress on the bunnies. #disasters
"“The direct physical damage and net-loss business interruption costs from Hurricane Otis will result in a minimum $10 billion in economic losses,” Steve Bowen, chief science officer for the global reinsurance broker Gallagher Re, wrote in an email. “It will be one of the costliest natural catastrophe events on record for Mexico.”" #Wx#disasters
"With so much more work to do on governmental and societal changes to drastically curb greenhouse-gas pollution, you might think Hurricane Otis and its assault on Acapulco would be a tipping point. But then you might have thought that about the Maui wildfire, or the choking wildfire smoke that darkened the eastern U.S., or any of the other floods or calamities that struck in the summer of 2023, as Planet Earth shattered all-time temperature records." #climate#disasters#HurricaneOtis

"Solar-based microgrids have also seen an uptick in adoption since Maria. During prolonged outages, they can provide a cleaner and less expensive alternative to emergency diesel generators. Diesel generators emit harmful pollutants and are expensive to operate, especially in the aftermath of a devastating storm, when fuel is scarce. " #disasters#generators#solar#hurricanes#microgrids
"When you see #EconomicModelling suggesting #ClimateChange won’t do much, you should treat it with serious scepticism. Look at what is being modelled – and everything left out."
"The global annual average loss (AAL) in the #infrastructure sectors due to #disasters and #ClimateChange currently stands between USD 301 and USD 330 billion – biennial report from the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (#CDRI).
The inclusion of health and education infrastructure, and building stock, increases that range to USD 732 - 845 bn, with nearly half of this contingent liability held by the low-and-middle-income countries."
"Deliberately grounded on a tiny reef in the #SouthChinaSea, part of an island chain claimed by the two Asian countries, the #BRPSierraMadre is now the unlikely base for a detachment of Filipino marines who stand guard over the atoll, scanning the turquoise waters for Chinese ships." #AyunginShoal#SecondThomasShoal#Philippines
