There are dozens of different server types on here, not just Mastodon servers. When you talk about this place, it's not enough to call it "Mastodon", because it's more than just that.
That's why people call this place "The Fediverse", because that name covers all server types. :fediverse:
So, it is possible for a group to make the collective decision to leave Twitter. Scientists "suffering insults and mass-spam are abandoning Twitter," and setting up shop on Mastodon.
"Glaciologist @Ruth_Mottram had more than 10,000 followers on Twitter but left in February and joined an alternative scientists' forum powered by Mastodon."
That is a valid additional (and important) point I think we did not consider yet when we recently had a discussion about such a site.
However, I think in that approach it is important to offer people platform choices.
I always struggle with missing features that had already existed on places like #Akkoma when I joined b/c I did not know about other platforms in the #Fediverse.
@Sarahp@chrismessina@mike I do think there'd be some utility in universal support for these various decentralized platforms, whether that means a new client lets you log into the #Fediverse, #Bluesky, and #Nostr, or existing clients graft in support for the other protocols.
Ugh, the #WordPress mobile app seems to have really gotten worse. I've never had problems with adding alt text to my media after an upload. Now I find it never saves my alt text that I spend time on writing only to find that my posts have images with no alt text. With everything that keeps breaking all of the time with WordPress it's starting to really wear on me. I already have to fix my vehicles, my home, the things my kids break. I don't feel like adding my website on top of it all. 🤬
@chris yeah, I've tried to keep my blog pretty basic, but I've wanted to do more with making it be my primary presence on the #Fediverse which of course complicates things.
Community wise I've been blessed that I have a pretty great, small, local #WordPress meetup community. The broader/global community has been hit-or-miss for me, so I totally understand some of the toxi aspects you are referring to.
If you could point me to different people who were part of developing these software solutions, that would be great. I got some of them, I would like to feature the champs that started/continued developing.
I promise it's nothing more than the straight-up promotion of this wonderful place.
Twitter is still the king for local topics concerning Bosnia and Herzegovina. Unfortunately, I don't see that many people, especially those not tech-savvy, switching to Fediverse anytime soon.
ah yes, the abandoned ruins of the #fediverse. because of reasons I came across #flockingbird again, which wanted to be a linkedin alternative, but just stopped posting anything in January.
Seriously, people, when talking about politics could we normalize "content warnings" under a hashtag mentioning what country this is about?
It'd make everyone's life on the Fediverse so much better.
Is it true Calckey allows for full imports of post archives? Is it possible to run as a standalone instance? Any tutorials out there? #calckey#fediverse#mastodon
If you created an instance in the hype of November and are now shutting down. Stop pretending it's because of "inter-instance drama. "
Being an admin has always been difficult. You're creating a false narrative because the shine has worn off and you're bored with it. That's OK. Just shut down, you don't need to make up reasons.
The covenent is expected behaviour whether on the join mastodon list or not. In other aspects of it you would expect to be defederated if you condone racism, sexism etc.
At the very least the admin, if they disagreed with covenant/ethos, they should have made it clear that the instance can be closed summarily for any non-avoidable reason before signing up 36,000 users. I would venture to say that was possibly irresponsible and damaging to the #Fediverse.
Step 1: Is the drama around an instance where everyone is a horrible human to other humans and it openly fosters a harmful environment?
Step 1a: If yes, suspend the remote server
Step 1b: If not, move to Step 2
Step 2: Don't give a shit, and don't waste your energy on something temporary or something blown out of the water that in the grand scheme means nothing
Pick your battles carefully, 99% of the time Mastodon text wars aren't the right choice. Spend your energy doing something good, not fueling a pointless fire
Sincerely, a server admin who is tired of hearing about "drama" every other day, that pushes cool people away from an otherwise awesome platform.
The only thing I love about Bluesky / AT Protocol is the use of subdomains for user names.
The double-@ is confusing as heck to people, but a link that also works as a mention name is obvious / intuitable (eg "Find me at jeremiahlee.bsky.social which makes me mentionable @jeremiahlee.bsky.social").
