Fediverse musings: folk saying you don't really need a migration of your posts between servers are implicitly minimising the value of something from months ago. Having just 'boosted an old toot' 😎 of mine from 5 months ago, it feels like a Mastodon :mastodon: apologists' view for an obvious shortcoming. And let's be clear ...
Me, 6 months ago?: a "born again pachyderm" 🐘
Me, today?: a "Fediverse explorer" :fediverse:
It''s the biggest reason I'm an early adopter checking out Calckey now -- the team there *get" this 💜 and ... I'm testing out how their new history migration works ie. Mastodon :ms_arrow_right: Calckey and Calckey :ms_arrow_left_right: Calckey migrations. It's coming
@jalcine Honestly, I'm not even going to get mad about this. For me, the fediverse already won. I found some really cool people here, and I don't really care too much to connect with anyone who stayed behind on Twitter just to shitpost.
@jalcine I have zero interest in another profit-driven (1) platform with questionable terms of service (2) and lenient attitude towards moderation (3), and one that uses the term "decentralized" very generously, considering its single instance is invite-only.
Moral of all the things I'm seeing/boosting this morning: If people leave for a proprietary service, figure out what that proprietary service is doing that interests them, instead of trying to argue them not to. Many people aren't here because it's #federated and #FOSS. They're here because it's better than the state of #twitter, and they'll leave when they feel like something is better than the state of #mastodon
I'm going to stay because I love #foss, but that's not everyone's priority.
This flip side to this is that people leaving isn't automatically a travesty. The #fediverse is built on resilient and adaptable ideas. We can stay and discuss and improve. And maybe #bluesky or The Next Big Thing will take people for a while, before it turns out to have its own problems, or before it faces #enshittification. And if we're still evolving while that happens, then people might come back and see previous concerns have been addressed.
Buenos días. Buenas tardes. Buenas noches.
Would it be reasonable and non-intrusive to suggest to some #academic organizations and #science#news magazines that I enjoy to consider establishing presence on the #Fediverse? Many of them currently post on Twitter or Facebook, and with a growing number of academics switching to #Mastodon, it seems like a logical step.
Good morning and Happy Friday all you wonderful people of the #Fediverse!
Time to have a #KoffeeWithKyle and let us know what you have planned for today and the weekend ahead. If you have already accomplished anything, you can include that also! Let us know in the comments below ⬇️.
For me, just the regular work from 9:30 to 6. After that, not sure what I’ll be doing.
Because weekends have an infinite number of hours, I'm exploring the idea of adding #ActivityPub support to #Plone.
Does anyone knows of a good #python implementation that could be a starting point? #fediverse#oss
#Twitter invested at least $13M in #Bluesky.
Sure, they say it operates independently, but Musk must still retain significant influence and control through Twitter's stake. Moving from Twitter to Bluesky might seem like flipping off Musk, but is it really? Did moving from #Facebook to #Instagram make you feel like you just flipped off Zuckerberg?
Maybe this why Bsky is getting such a boost on birdsite right now. The goal was eventually to integrate it to Twitter (Verge reported).
Meanwhile, there is a true #Fediverse that is not built and controlled by billionaires.
I know I've been posting a lot on Bluesky and mostly not flattering stuff. The fact is we have our own shit on the fediverse to work out. We have ease of onboarding problems, ease of use problems, account portability problems, etc. Perhaps some of what they or others are doing could help fix some of those problems, my big beef being the account portability issue. However it is important to be aware of the hype bubble that is blowing up around Bluesky versus the reality of what is going on there. They are getting the full court press in the MSM and tech media. What comes of it is TBD. We saw the same hype cycle with Mastodon in the Twitter Migration, and that sword obviously cut both ways. In the mean time I want to work to get the fediverse, specifically my network Friendica, in a place where I can just recommend it to my non-tech savvy relatives versus recommending it with qualifiers at best to even my tech savvy friends. #fediverse#friendica#bluesky#mastodon#TwitterMigration
@anders Absolutely someone could, and very likely will. When it happens, I hope its bi-directionnal. The one way relays from #nostr to #fediverse, and those from twitter, are not very engaging.
I was thinking earlier that it would be pretty cool to have an #ActivityPub-powered app that uses something like the old #WordPress#PostFormats feature that, in turn, supports post formats that other #Fediverse services use.
For example, the app can post regular posts like this one, structured link posts that work with services like #Lemmy, galleries through @pixelfed and videos through #Peertube.
Unless #ActivityPub automatically reformats posts based on what they contain when a user of services like these receives them in their feeds? I'm not sure how this works under the metaphorical hood. 🤔
#BlueSky is a step backwards for #Decentralisation. It'll be another walled garden with power concentrated at the admin level instead of the user being in control.
Just as with #Mastodon, the focus will be on scalability of a few really big instances, instead of creating an environment that fosters a network of many small instances.
There's a reason that I have a single user instance since many years. I strongly believe that a better balance of power is possible and achievable for #ActivityPub
@jwildeboer I believe that while single-user instances are good for technically inclined users who want to enjoy all the freedoms and burdens that come with self-hosting, but I also think that large instances with a stable financial backing (hopefully directly from their users) are also good for non-technical users who want stability.
Small instances where one guy maintains a server for 20 people will leave the users hanging when the admin decides they've had enough.
Some people will never leave Twitter because it's familiar, they're an established journalist addicted to feeling important, or because they're right-wing chuds who want to see Musk and Truth Social Redux succeed.
Some will migrate to Bluesky for Twitter without Musk. Some will stick with Mastodon on principle or because it's good enough. And then there's some also rans. But I don't think Mastodon or Twitter are going anywhere anytime soon.
@donnodubus All I am saying is that, fundamentally, #Bluesky breaks no new ground and it seems that its design intent was effectively a clone of Twitter - which is immediately frictionless to many just seeking a quick "Musk free" alternative.
Fine with me, but I predict Bluesky users are running straight into the same buzzsaw.
#Mastodon and the #Fediverse, while far from ideal today on multiple levels, are at least putting the work in to change an already proven-to-be disastrous status quo.
@micahflee
This is good news.
For the same reasons 4chan has found its users, Facebook has grandpa, and we have #fediverse/#mastodon, they have have Bsky and Nostr. Eventually, we all find the community we deserve. Its more fun to belong.
