I biked to the garden store doubled as a pet center, so I could get some newer fish food flakes. I bought a couple pots of armeria maritima rosea too, which luckily fit in my water pouch backpack 👌
Bonus photo: a baby frog (the size of a pinky finger nail) on the glass wall of a tank where the store staff held a few tadpoles among aquatic plants.

A small frog on a transparent surface next to a leaf in a body of water.
A full backpack placed on a gravel surface with purple flowers inside. A person wearing white athletic shoes and white pants is visible next to the backpack.
A terracotta pot with green grass-like plants, white rocks, and pink flowers, set outdoors with more greenery in the background.

So we officially have a alternative: @loops.

I actually thought about building a libre reimplementation of TikTok’s video editor, but abandoned that after realizing how much I hate TikTok.

Hopefully Loops - and , another planned alternative - won’t end up as bad, and won’t be as fucking brain-dead, even if not intelligent (social media in general, and TikTok in particular, cannot be intelligent).

I honestly do feel guilty about @loops success when just a week before I reached out to @stux and offered my help to build a mobile app for GoldFish

I don't want him to lose interest in and all the hard work he's put into learning front and backend development

I stick by my word and will write a basic GoldFish app and teach him native app dev and he'll be one of those unstoppable fedi devs in no time 😎

Collaboration > Competition

@loops Just had a really nice and productive chat with @stux

We're on the same page and will be working together to build out our short video vision across our platforms

+ = 🚀

Don't get me wrong, I love Mastodon and everything it's done for the fediverse

That being said, I don't want Loops to become the only short form video platform, or the only well known one

I'm working with @stux on his own short vid platform called and PeerTube to enable seamless interop

We're stronger and better together

There is no reason NOT to work with "competitors" because when you have the right mindset and goals:

You build for the people, and listen wisely.

@dansup @stux

100% agree!

This is the approach I'm working on too. We don't need one single Goodreads replacement. Readers want different things, and there are so many alternative services that take different approaches.

Heck, I list them on my own site, and I'd love to work with many of them on interoperability between systems.

tizian,

@dansup @stux I'm loving your energy and do also advocate for diversity in the fediverse. However, doesn't this also inflate the development and maintenance cost since for every service their own apps for every platform has to be developed and maintained? Isn't this quite costly over time? :Blobhaj:

If there are any other #fediverse developers working on a TikTok like platform for the fediverse:

Maybe we can join forces and work together with Loops, and if not, lets keep in touch so we can work on #activitypub compatibility?

I'm already working closely with @stux on #Goldfish, which is shaping up to be a serious fedi TikTok contender!

@dansup @stux I believe right now it’s just as far as I’ve come across. Still three potential alternatives on is 🔥.

Doing pretty good, how about yourself!

I've heard about Loops and a bit about Goldfish, but looking through the replies, I'm just learning about Vidzy now.

Definitely going to check this out!

When stux was tinkering with I contributed a few euros, not much but better than nothing. And now it looks like the time has come to support dansup and because that's some S tier quality work he's doing there!

Loops are for short duration videos (max 30 seconds) and is a separate app/platform from Pixelfed.

We're also working with @stux and his #Goldfish project so the fediverse will have many options to choose from.

Loops is more like Vine, simple and short, for longer videos we think Goldfish and/or PeerTube can meet your needs.

This is the amazing thing about the fediverse, instead of competing with Goldfish, I'm mentoring/helping them.

In the fediverse, we all win, no matter the platform.

A while ago I've set my focus back on web dev again and mainly the Goldfish concept 💪

Currently I'm busy getting fully back into the code with courses so that we can rewrite the front- and backend in the right away with a seperation and API :blobcathearts:

@stux I'm so pumped for and being able to help you build this out.

This really is a shining example of the collaboration that is possible in the fediverse.

Fuck competition, Loops + Goldfish are family and will have features and opportunities that are unique to such an open and decentralized platform.

Collaboration is key, we can show the internet how it's done properly, and make history together ❤️

A bunch of collaborators interviewed for this #NYT story about one of my co-workers at the Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. During electrofishing surveys of #Hamilton Harbour, Christine Boston regularly catches *huge #goldfish which had been released when they outgrew people's home aquariums. They disturb plants and littoral areas and have no predators because nothing can eat them.

@DrPlanktonguy I've been glad to see so much of the fishkeeping hobby talking honestly in recent years about how much better it is to keep fish that will be happy in the size tank that you've got

but we have a loooong way to go with the Petcos of the world

(I've def kept invasive species...and I've had to euthanize a couple over the years, and while that's not fun it's part of the responsibility)
