Look who was a naughty stop-out last night /this morning.
We spotted him/her leaving the food box & on the way home to bed. He/she tried to be unobtrusive in the corner behind the garden bench, but decided that wasn't working...
He/she headed off to bed & made it into the undergrowth with no mishaps. Sweet dreams little hog.

A little hedgehog, having stayed out past dawn (& having discovered that he/she was not well camouflaged behind the bench in the corner of the house) headed for home and bed. Sleep well, little hog.

It’s the time of year when grunting, circling and huffing return to Devon. These mating rituals happen not, as you may think in Plymouth clubland but in gardens and green spaces at night….sound up 🔝 .

OH heard a lot of grunting outside our kitchen window in the middle of the night. On looking to see, turns out it was two hedgehogs "very much in love" 😄💕

Seems there might be a family of hedgehogs soon 🤗

From 2 nights ago. Apologies for the badly positioned trailcam, I moved it when cutting the grass.
They are all happily eating cat kibble from the grass.
I'm thinking of writing a children's story -
The Slug, the Hedgehogs and the Fox 😉

After a scare, here's our little hedgehog friend free and tucking into cat biscuits and a dish of water - make your garden a safer place for hedgehogs. Watch the video in the link to fully appreciate what a noisy eater the little soul is!

using the ramp. There is a large step off the patio to the rhubarb, under the will be good hunting for the , there is the long way around but had these concrete edging slabs doing nothing so built a ramp for the hogs.

My patio. On the right are the water butts. The left are rose and other plants that do not do well in the waterlogged soil. Just to the left of the water butt is the ramp where the hedgehog rises from the lower area where the rhubarb is.

Quality of the image when the hog is in shot is not great but want to hear a sniffing out its food? Volume up.
I understand Hedgehogs rely on their sense of smell more than their eyes to locate prey.
(large leaves at the back is my rhubarb, already ready this year, weather is nuts)

I placed the camera on the ground. The hedgehog is doing the rounds and inspects the camera with a good sniff, if you have the volume up you can hear it sniffing out potential food.

For the last week or so I’ve been keeping a close eye on our garden cam to see if our little hedgehog friend had woken up yet.

Absolutely delighted to wake up to this footage this morning.

Almost finished my grown up Daughter's Christmas present.
This is a wooden hedgehog house.

I made an inner box from 12mm OSB then clad it using home milled Cherry wood (sides & roof) and thin T&G boards in Meranti made from my Daughter's old back door.

Personal preferences aside: it’s way for November. So much, that I find it unsettling.

It’s not cold enough for and to hibernate, yet not warm enough for , and the likes to find food.

The Woodland Trust in UK has issued a reminder for people not to put their pumpkins in the woods as wildlife such as Hedgehogs can become ill if they eat them.
When you've finished with your pumpkin they recommend that you put it in your recycling bin or cut it up and bury it in the garden for invertebrates to enjoy.

The Hedgehog feeding station is now protected from slug invasion by a parallel track of copper wires connected to a 9v battery.

This won't harm the slugs but they should feel an unpleasant tingle.

We've already had a pair of juveniles feeding together here tonight, sitting across the wires and the didn't seem to notice anything. The slugs will!

Woodknot,

Oh Noooo!

I was hoping the slugs would get an unpleasant tickle, this seems too much
