In this week's #Linux and #OpenSource news video, we have a plan to add support for HDR and Variable Refresh Rate on Linux, chips from AMD that surpass Apple Silicon, and more dominant position abuse from Microsoft, plus updates on #LinuxMint 21.2, some new #GNOME apps, progress on #KDE Plasma 6, and more!
And also, I'm trying to replace the "walls of scrolling text" with more focused snippets so it's a bit more entertaining to watch! Let me know what you think!
@cnx In the world of editors, I keep going back to #vim. I'm just so used to it. evil-mode does a great job, but then there's customizations that I already have working in vim, but not #emacs.
I did make a drastic change in my desktop setup, though, I'm running #KDE with #AwesomeWM now. I also found some library to make Awesome's tags (supposedly) work like #XMonad's tags. When this laptop gets to the office with additional monitors, I can see if it makes true on that promise!
So, I finally got around to installing #windows11 Professional Edition in a virtual machine and chose the lightest options possible throughout the install process. It still forces 7 apps into the pinned apps portion of the start menu which were completely unsolicited. They can be uninstalled, but still...
Did I mention this was the Professional Edition?
On a good note, the UI strikes the perfect balance between #kde and #cinnamon. We could use a desktop environment like this in #linux.
@mp362 My attempts to make #KDE look the way I want always end in frustration. I’m a recovering macOS user, so I like a bottom dock and a top panel. Nothing too fancy, except I want them to be transparent - NOT blurred - a feat that KDE apparently cannot accomplish without also making any text, icons, and menus from applets on the panel transparent as well.
Automated testing is crucial for the continued quality of #KDE software. The #Selenium webdriver automates such tests. Selenium-AT-SPI does the same but for #Qt programs.
Just found out that #KDE has Windows Vista style 3D window switching (ALT+TAB)! Brings back some memories, but I prefer the Thumbnail Grid layout myself. I did not care for the default one.
I am just a simple man trying to make my way in the fediverse. I am a big #StarWars fan. I converted to the #Linux side, currently using #GarudaLinux and #KDE. I am a proponent of #FOSS. I am a graphic & web designer in SoCal. I hail from the #GooglePlus system (where I was a Google+ Creator and the "Star Wars guy" there...) . I've been a social media nomad since after the Empire destroyed it back in 2018. RIP :(
Upgraded my desktop at work to #Fedora#Kinoite 38. Upgrades don't get any easier than this! Just a click and reboot and it even upgraded my #Lenovo firmware for me in the process (I love that of shows up like any other update in #KDE Discover)!
Steam will soon use the desktop portal file picker.
In practice, it means Steam will use your native desktop method for selecting and saving files, resulting in better user experience and desktop integration.
This is one of many things Flatpak and GNOME pioneered that improves the Linux desktop for everyone.
Ok, I've got the Translucency and Blur options turned off in the #KDE#Plasma "Desktop Effects" control panel, but I've still got an Application Launcher that's a bit too transparent for my liking.
Oh dear. Plasma is such a pleasure until you start mucking about with settings %)
Over the next few weeks, I'm going to TRY to accurately measure my power consumption doing daily work tasks on my big tower PC, the Steam Deck, and the HP Dev One laptop. (Using a Kill-A-Watt P3).
ALSO? Gaming power consumption comparisons between my desktop PC & the Xbox Series X, both at 4K resolution.
I expect it will be an eye-opening experience and I'll never turn on my tower again.
This will undoubtedly branch off into all kinds of software testing too. YES, I'll record & share data...
