"Yesterday’s ideas won’t work for you tomorrow!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Someone asked me yesterday about my comment that Chinese automotive companies will likely own the automotive industry of the future.

Sadly, I think that it is true - the reason for that being that most auto manufacturers seem to continue to be busy fighting the battles of the last century, using product designs, ideas, and concepts involving the vehicle architecture of that era. The other automotive company that has the opportunity to own the industry in the 21st century has a CEO in place who has no focus on the battle ahead.

Case in point? How about this:

Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest carmaker, has since been a frequent EV skeptic, funding misleading advertisements, and lobbying against government policies that promote them around the world.

How Three High-Tech Countries Became Laggards in Electric Vehicles,Japan, South Korea and the US have fallen behind their peers in EV adoption — despite meeting the criteria to be frontrunners.Blooomberg, April 4, 2024

I could dig out a zillion articles like this from my research service that play into this theme, but why bother? Many folks have an ingrained belief that the dominant companies of the 20th century will be the dominant ones of the 21st. It's their right!

Rather than doing that, I went into one of my research services and dug out this article from 1962, which involves a desperate plea from the Association of Buggy Whip Manufacturers.

You want to read this one!

Please, do not start your decision making processes or tickets with solutions.

Start your processes describing the problem you want to solve and the expected outcome. Let the team - people who will implement it - define the solution collaboratively.

If you (manager / boss) define the solution and expect the team only to implement it, you are just a and not an empowered, agile team. This is in name only, a superficial one.

Thank you!

This isn't at all the answer to what you asked, but I hope you can forgive my asking that, if you use the F-droid store on Android, may I recommend an app called Cool Reader, and a cheap Google Play Store app text to speech engine by Cereproc?

The voice might be a bit "Steven Hawking", but having one's phone read books to oneself opens a vein of the richest thoughts of humankind throughout time.

Whether you want to "read" a medical handbook of ADHD, or Adam Smith's Theories of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth Of Nations, or The Rise And Fall Of The Great Powers, or Flatland, or Seneca's Letters To Lucilius, or Wind Sand And Stars: if you can find them in epub, you can smash them into your brain as easily as Keanu Reeves in a dystopian future.

(Hint1: you can find them in epub. The best books are long out of copyright, and can be found on "pirate libraries" like z-lib, Anna's Archive, or libgen. Hint2: if reading from a mobile 'phone screen consider fettling the settings. Amber text on a black background, with font and margins tailored to your taste is invariably far finer than the default settings. Hint 3: I previously tried Cool Reader from the play store and it had been compiled by a third party with advertising nonsense and God knows what else. Get the F-droid store and install it from there for your own security. It's open-source and doesn't try to send your data anywhere. Hint4: for complex subjects while driving etc you might consoder altering the reading speed.)

The family of the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg have released a statement denouncing the decision to bestow the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Leadership Award on a group that includes Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch. The chair of the award committee, corporate lawyer Brendan Sullivan, said: “The honorees reflect the integrity and achievement that defined Justice Ginsburg’s career and legend,” but Ginsburg's family called the award, "an affront to the memory of our mother and grandmother, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg." The award was previously given only to women, but expanded this year to honor men (Martha Stewart is the only female recipient), with Julie Opperman, chair of the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation (the award's organizer) saying: "Justice Ginsburg fought not only for women but for everyone." Here's more from Mother Jones.

Update: The RBG Award Gala has been canceled after the backlash from Ruth Bader Ginsburg's family. "It is important to note, that the last thing we intended was to offend the family and friends of RBG. Our purpose was only to remember her and to honor her leadership,” Julie Opperman, chair of the foundation that organizes the awards, said. “Over the next several months the Foundation will reconsider its mission and make a judgment about how or whether to proceed in the future,” Opperman’s statement said. Here's more from the Hill.
