Ok, this should put some people at ease. We haven't had much information on the #XZ debacle on the #LinuxMint side. We know that Mint is built on #Ubuntu and by extension #Debian. The obvious question: was Mint affected - the quick answer - No, that we know of, as of today. I did a fresh install of Virginia 21.3 and it comes with #liblzma5 version 5.2.5
You can check your own system to put your mind at ease - run: apt list liblzma5
how are you doing? will respond to you tomorrow, if there will be such.
I've been recently trying to be active on all 3 famous Twitter alternatives (Bluesky, Threads, and here). I do check notifications and do reply if needed.
switched from @Waterfox & @Vivaldi 's AppImage versions to .deb, have some issues with syncing, will report tomorrow.
good night, see you next time! I will post probably tomorrow unlike today.
This is definitely a pain point for consumers. I strategically avoided #NVIDIA when looking for my new laptop that is now running #LinuxMint. Why? Driver support is non-existent. The fact that Linus points out that they are the single biggest problem as it relates to hardware manufacturing is not only telling, but a warning to future #Linux users. In other words, buy #AMD or use #IntelGraphics.
I am so excited! I found a way to customize the #LinuxMint desktop. If it works, I'll post a screenfetch with the new look and the tutorial. This weekend is going to be fun! :linuxmint:
After #distro-hopping for a few months now, the only two flavors of #Linux I liked were #Debian & #LinuxMint. They just work, and they're on point. Debian impressed me with its stability, but #Mint impressed me for having thought of & implemented 99% of all cases of someone thinking "I wish I could tweak this or that" on a #desktop. There's an #app, utility, or option for everything, and that's rare. The most important thing is that it provides all that without feeling overloaded like #KDE does.
#Linux#LMDE#LinuxMint
If you are coming from Windows, I do highly recommend the Cinnamon desktop.
With Linux, you get more choices... which can bring confusion because you aren't used to that with Windows.
The Cinnamon desktop environment is one of perhaps six major desktop environment options, with many more less used options available, too.
Cinnamon is the desktop environment developed by Linux Mint, so is default with that, but you can install and use it easily on many Linux "distos" (distributions of software that are bundled together).
Linux Mint Debian Edition is a good place to get started.
Ok so for the second time, my Thinkpad T570 touchpad just suddenly stopped working. The last time, only a reboot fixed it. This time, it intermittently accepts touches, but mangles them awfully.
The red joystick still works, as do the mouse keys.

#Linux is like a Chinese copy of an #OS with poorly written documentation and badly fitting parts. I'm trying to load #Mozilla#Thunderbird on #Linux_Mint but the instructions are gibberish. e.g. instructions say following libraries or packages are needed:
glibc 2.17 or higher
GTK+ 3.14 or higher
libdbus-glib 0.6.0 or higher
libglib 2.42 or higher
libstdc++ 4.8.1 or higher
libxtst 1.2.3 or higher
X.Org 1.0 or higher
Why isn't there a way to check if my Mint install already has them?
@Yoshi#LinuxMint is (should be) quite user-friendly, and you should be able to do 99% of what you want without needing to use the command line.
In terms of installing software, think of #Linux more like Android than Windows. In Android you don't go to a website to download and install apps; you go to the Play Store. Similarly in Linux, you can install most applications via the distribution's software center.
@ChloeCat Good afternoon. I've got myself a new toy to play with so I'm happy. I'm not so happy that the #LinuxMint update session took so long this time though. I'm used to updates being near instant on the new machine.
I need a distro that can work right out the box without too much hassle to configure it, which one would you recommend?
Thx in advice.
