https://aboutplacejournal.org/article/the-silent-madness-of-whales/
My essay “The Silent Madness of Whales” was published last year on About Place Journal. “When I was a little girl, I liked to walk down to the landwash to see the bodies of pothead whales. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, they often beached themselves on the shoreline of my home in Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland. My family had to keep the dogs on leashes, otherwise they would tunnel inside rotting whales and roll around. The dogs loved the smell, but we did not.” @indigenousauthors

How from humans is wreaking havoc on U.S.

Nation Jul 18, 2017 2:20 PM EDT

"As transportation networks expand and urban areas grow, noise from sources such as vehicle engines is spreading into remote places. Human-caused noise has consequences for wildlife, entire and people. It reduces the ability to hear natural sounds, which can mean the difference between life and death for many animals, and degrade the calming effect that we feel when we spend time in wild places."

I'm planning on submitting a summary of these studies as part of my arguments against the . I grew up near a 4-lane highway, and the vibrations and noise pollution were constant -- I hadn't realized how bad it was until I went back home a few years ago and camped in my old backyard -- and felt every speeding tractor trailer truck going by.

Evidence of the impact of noise pollution on biodiversity: a systematic map

By Romain Sordello, Ophélie Ratel, Frédérique Flamerie De Lachapelle, Clément Leger, Alexis Dambry & Sylvie Vanpeene

Environmental Evidence volume 9, Article number: 20 (2020)

"Ecological research now deals increasingly with the effects of on . Indeed, many studies have shown the impacts of and concluded that it is potentially a threat to the persistence of many species. The present work is a systematic map of the evidence of the impacts of all anthropogenic noises (industrial, urban, transportation, etc.) on biodiversity. This report describes the mapping process and the evidence base with summary figures and tables presenting the characteristics of the selected articles."

New research into how baleen make low, vibrating sounds is also highlighting the serious dangers these animals face from ocean noise pollution.

"These animals perceive danger by hearing," said Hussein Alidina, lead specialist for marine conservation with WWF Canada. "So if that aspect is getting masked or interfered with, then it poses a danger to them."

I'm not sure what's more annoying, the sound of a tesla driving down the quaint narrow streets of my neighborhood or the sound of one when its driver is trying to parallel park.

Living where we do - on the western edge of #Leicester - we're fairly used to some traffic problems when there's an incident on the M1.

Today it's been off the scale. Two separate incidents have meant the northbound #M1 has been closed since lunchtime.

Thankfully we've only been marginally affected, and thankfully it seems there were no fatalities.

One bonus is that our bedroom will be a lot quieter until the road fully reopens.

Dense, carless cities connected by high speed rail with vast stretches of wilderness in between instead of sprawl (more national/state park/forest please!) is where I'd like to go. Build taller, denser; build for sound isolation; build for isolated, filtered, ventilated air. Save the planet while allowing population to grow

I know that anecdote ≠ data, but I just went for my usual Sunday morning run on the day the new #ReadyFor20mph starts in Wales.

Much easier to cross roads without breaking stride, more cyclists than usual on a rainy day, and much less noise.

Interesting to hear Lee Waters’ on #SundaySupplement (link below) identify #NoisePollution as a problem. Can the Welsh Gov ban souped-up exhausts next please?

I just don't want to hear them ever again. We don't have to discuss the environmental costs if we can band together simply to eliminate a really annoying noise.

Social media: “economists only care about GDP!”

Actual economist in NBER paper: “We find consistent evidence that vessel noise pollution from international shipping has lowered fertility and raised the mortality of the SRKW [Orcas] significantly. Had noise pollution remained at its pre-1998 levels, the SRKW population would be 30% larger. Noise pollution is a growing threat to marine mammals worldwide.”
