Walking through & wetland marshes are to the right. Small to stroll. Still some purple out.

En route home & will be uploading more photos, shortly. We had the whole park to ourselves - only wildlife sharing spaces today 😊

First spotted.
The eaten in small quantities - fresh, cooked or dried. Some made a purgative tonic out of the bark. Their crushed leaves smell like cucumbers.

Good soil-binding qualities on moist sites. Possible species (Washington State Department of Ecology, 1993).

Some of the #footpath #NatureTrails we walked on today 😊 It was sure nice to see no other humans in the park. We enjoyed a lot of nature delights, loved all the birds calling & singing, saw a squirrel & muskrat in creek areas & had a lovely time together ❤️

Boardwalk leading out to nature trail. Lots of full foliage trees surrounding.
Small footpath, with trees, shrubs & plants surrounding both sides, leading into natural tunneled trail.

La Niña years in the are so iffy.

I grew up in the area. We may have a La Niña year during which it rains, and rains, and rains - for months. Sometimes La Niña goes 2 years in the PNW and the California transplants give up and leave us.

So far, this is looking, um, very rainy.

Send life jackets. 🌧️ ☔️

Got caught in the rain today, and waited out the shower under a rhododendron. Not a bad way to spend fifteen minutes. Entertained myself watching a crow across the street, looking picturesque in a blooming dogwood.

On Memorial Day, I took a day off from the garden to visit one of the most famous spots in the Cascade range (Washington State) for plant geeks. It's called Perry Creek, about 90 minutes NE of Seattle. A unique coincidence of topography and weather patterns allows about 250 species of native plants to thrive in a small valley. It has a special protected status under the National Forest Service. A meandering plant photo thread.

Mountain valley, cloudy misty day. A pyramidal peak, snow capped, dominates the horizon. Wooded slopes frame either side of the picture and a trail leads through very mossy rocks into the distance towards the peak.
Trail leading beneath maple trees off into the distance toward the mountain. Moss hangs in curtains from maple branches and more moss blankets the stones I. Either side of the trail. Dappled afternoon sunlight peeks through the trees.

Perry Creek plant safari cont'd. Now for some plants I can't identify....Photo 1 & 2: this is obviously a fern but as it's barely unfurling I can't tell which. Lovely nonetheless. Lady fern perhaps? Photos 3 & 4: This flower is a real stumper. Notice the variegated foliage. At first I thought it was foam flower but that little yellow flower is not right for that. Anyone recognize it?

A second view of the same plants.
A very small plant on the forest floor. The foliage is deeply dissected and variegated with a dark pattern splashed across the basal area of each leaf.
A second view of the same plant with a very tiny yellow flower in the center. It is shaped like a star.

Back in our gardens.

- - Great for .

It's proven to be , once established. One of very few proven to be resistant to air pollution too. I highly recommend this for . It's a gorgeous plant too.

#SeaBeet aka #WildSpinach is a #WildAncestor of beetroot & Swiss chard.

Large #edible #perennial that needs full sun & no shade. As it's namesake, tolerant of high sodium soil & wind resistant - it depends on winds to pollinate hermaphroditic flowers. I recommend this easy to grow #plant, for coastal food gardens.
