Ten seconds on the trail and things are already out of control.

Reading the wiki entry for the Dog vomit slime mold I ran across this morning they mention, "The levels of zinc in Fuligo septica were so high (4,000–20,000 ppm) that it is difficult to understand how a living organism can tolerate them." Apparently it “... produces a yellow pigment called fuligorubin A, which has been shown to chelate metals and convert them to inactive forms.”
Finland, Dutch, and Latvian lore refer to it as witches spit or witches butter.

Saw these bright orange weird things on an old birch. When I examined closer I saw tiny chambers, their openings no larger than a toothpick point.

Super tiny flying stingy things?!

No.

Ok, have to be galls. When all else fails, go with galls.

Nope.

Two days later I smartened up. What’s even more weird and freaky than galls?

Slime Molds! This is the most bizarro slime mold I’ve ever found.

There is the most amazing blue stuff growing on my very old branches on a neglected and damp woodpile (slime / algae / moss / lichen?). I’ve never seen anything quite like it! (Northern Tuscany, Italy 🇮🇹 ) Not ideal for burning & heating my old house, but aesthetically pleasing. Ideas, anyone?

The has awaken!

The dried "snot" on the left spent 3 years in the drawer. A little bit of humidity and food turned it into the sprawling yellow goo on the right :-)

Close up of some very fresh Wolf’s Milk slime mold on an old stump. Don’t tend to find a lot around here in December.

Dog Sick Slime Mold
(not Dog Vomit - Fuligo septica)

This one has been taxonomy hopping over on iNaturalist, twice this year. Spongiosum seems nicely descriptive, at least.

Mucilago crustacea (inactive)
Didymium mucilago (inactive)
Didymium spongiosum ✅

72 hours in the life of a slime mold.

This week I discovered a slime mold taking over an old stump behind the house. Over the next 3 days I took a picture of it at the same time of day. Notice the section that grasped the twig - how it then didn’t proceed like the remainder of the mass. Once slime molds leave the plasmodium stage and enter the fruiting stage, the change is FAST.

Picture 2. On Wednesday (24 hours later) the slime has decreased slightly in size and darkened to a dirtier white/pink color. Some of the slime has hardened.
Picture 3 on Thursday (24 hours after picture 2). The slime continues to harden and is now well into its fruiting stage. The color is purple/gray.
Picture 4. On Friday (72 hours after the 1st picture) the slime mold is hard, nearly crumbly, and black. Soon it will begin to fall apart. Doing so will aid in spore dispersal.

I would guess it may be e.g. Leocarpus fragilis, also called Insect-egg slime, at different stages of "fruiting" or the result of dry weather, which negatively influenced the creation of spore capsules. Maybe therefore the different sizes and shades?

… which is #NOTaFungi at all, but a #SlimeMold, which is not a Mold either, despite its name.

Slimemold season is here 😍. This orange patch on a rotting log was about 3 cm long. I think is Salmon Eggs Slime Mold (Hemitrichia decipiens). They move along the wood to eat bacteria and algae, and help decomposing it.

Slime mold sporangia! Went out looking for some yesterday and found plenty.

The "stick" they're growing on is a pine needle.

Two days ago I posted a photo of the best Slime Molds I'd ever found.

Well, today I went back to revisit them. They'd gone from to

They were now even harder to photograph, it needed a near half second exposure under the gloomy log, but it was windy and they wouldn't keep still and kept giving off clouds of microscopic brown spores.
