Anchorage Airport is at 123.6 inches of snow for the season. The record is 134.5 inches. Ten years since 1953 have had enough snow to set a new record. So knowing nothing else, it’s unlikely but by no means out of the question that this finishes as Anchorage’s snowiest winter of record. @Climatologist49 @EBecker @patrace @EyeOnAlaska @sbmorgan

Alaska’s Cold Snap 2024 is done. In some areas the past two weeks featured the coldest sustained weather in 15 years. At others, a day or two of intense cold was more prominent. While quite cold for the 21st century, this event doesn’t even rate an asterisk compared to 20th century cold snaps. Lowest community temperature was at perennially cold spot of Chicken at -62F (-52.2C).

Always amazing how precipitation (rain plus the water in melted snow) can vary in complex terrain, not just storm to storm but even across several months. November 2023 through January 2024
Anchorage Airport: 220 percent of normal precipitation and the highest NDJ total of record.
Meanwhile, 35 miles away at
Girdwood: precipitation was a little bit below normal (94%)

Bettles, Alaska (northern Interior, Koyukon Dene county) Sunday high temperature will very likely be -50F (-45.6C). This would be a new record for the lowest high temperature on Jan 28, breaking the previous record of -47F (-43.9C) set in 2012. This would also be the latest date in the winter with a high temperature of -50F. Previous latest was Jan 27, 1989. Climate observations at Bettles since 1944.

Snowfall this month (through the morning of Jan 25) in the greaterJuneau area:

Snettisham Power: 86.5 inches (219.7cm)
Annex Creek 71.7 inches (182.1cm)
NWS Office (Mendenhall Valley) 70.3 inches (178.6cm)
Airport: 70.0 inches (177..8cm)
Lena Point: 68.0 inches (172.2cm)

With warmer air now in place there's little chance of 2024 finishing up as the snowiest January on record. All that shoveling and nothing but a sore back. 😩

Nerd alert: Fairbanks and Interior Alaska appear be setting up for the longest sustained cold during an El Niño winter since 1972-73. ECMWF ensembles for 850mb temperatures keep it very cold into early February. How cold it gets mostly depends on clouds. No clouds, very cold. Some clouds, less cold.
