Hi, did you ever at any point download the client for a very obscure commercial MUD called VR-1 Crossroads? It came out around 1999-2000, was free to play, had a graphical user interface, music and sound and was absolutely phenomenal. If you have ANY info or have somehow downloaded and horded the client please... PLEASE let me know. Boosts are appreciated, thank you.

Recently, there's been some panic about the right-wing's attempts to influence culture through "alternative" media platforms like Bentkey.

But this is what conservatives have always done. I should know because I'm very much a product of these conservative media alternatives.

My mother didn't allow me to watch Saturday morning cartoons. She said they were a bad influence. And she also didn't allow me to listen to what she called "secular" music either.

Instead of the regular kids' TV shows, I had to watch VHS tapes rented from the Christian book store. Instead of good old fashioned rock music everyone else was allowed to listen to, I had to hear Christian rock. And there was a Christian version of everything.

The Christian version of the Wonder Years was Magee And Me!

The Christian version of Green Day was MxPx.

The Christian version of Legend of Zelda was Spiritual Warfare.

At one time, I thought this "alternative" media was just an evangelical Christian thing. But then when I spent time with orthodox Jews, I found out that they have their own "alternative" media too. A fellow I was studying with was a Haredi rapper named Matisyahu.

I'm not going to lie and say that the quality of media is always garbage because it isn't. Lots of it has gone mainstream. I bet you that some of your favourite artists got their start in right-wing "alternative" media.

For example, Katy Perry. Do you know she started off in the Christian music industry?

Same deal with Evanescence. They were a right wing Christian act.

And VeggieTales too -- as evangelical as they come.

Here's what eventually happens, though. Once the big corporations smell money, they move in. For example, one of the biggest right wing Christian record labels is the Provident Label Group.

And who owns Provident Label Group? Sony. That's right, the same company that brought you Twisted Metal, Ratchet & Clank, and Killzone is hawking right wing Christian music.

Now if you're a progressive, you're probably quite concerned -- and you should be. But if you're a right wing Christian, you're probably even more concerned.

That's because the likes of Sony don't give a damn about evangelical Christianity. To them, this is just another revenue stream. And should one of their artists have runaway success, they almost always tone down the Christianity in order to reach a wider audience.

It's how the game is played.

Right wing pundits like to say that politics lives downstream from culture. That may be true. However, culture always lives downstream from money.

Amusingly, what lives downstream from money? Politics.

@atomicpoet my first job was a Christian bookstore and can confirm all of this. There even was a Christian Eminem called, Double M. What was interesting was how the bookstore responded to when something became mainstream. Evanescence broke out and it was an immediate removal of all their CDs.

What I found very eye opening was how it got even more specific, splitting hairs between Catholic and Protestant media.

This was 22 years ago.

It's all capitalism and marketing.

Does anyone out there have any experience with development on the Commodore 64? I have the source code to the game Habitat and see if they can make sense of how we could make a tool to view the many objects in the game?

Hi, I'm Jon. I have zero experience and zero knowledge in programming. What I do have is an overflowing passion for video games and video game preservation. I've talked a lot about the Commodore 64 social MMO, Habitat here and there has been so much progress being done in creating a tool for modern region and object editing. I have no hand in making it, but because I spoke up, it brought it to the attention of someone who could. Never stop enthusing. Never stop being passionate.

The Daily Grind: Are there MMOs that make you sad to play?

@massivelyop So many! I love to explore old MMOs that have a small dedicated fan base and there is a sense of melancholy when engaging in mechanics and ideas that can't live up to their full potential due to a lack of active playback. You see how this game was intended to play and there is not much you can do to instill that passion in others to capture even a glimmer of the games potential. That's sad.

Vague Patch Notes: The problem with forever adding classes to MMOs
🔗 https://massivelyop.com/2024/05/09/vague-patch-notes-the-problem-with-forever-adding-classes-to-mmos

Bogusmeatfactory,
@Bogusmeatfactory@dosgame.club avatar

@massivelyop I get very frustrated when people expect MMO expansions to always include new races/classes. Unless the game had them conceived from the start, they always feel unbalanced, tacked on or don't fit with the world at large.

Expansions should be about new discoveries, a change in world events or new features that fit within the broad scope of the world. I don't know... I feel old, but MMOs just don't feel like virtual worlds because of this modern design philosophy.

The Daily Grind: How much do graphics matter to you in an MMORPG?
🔗 https://massivelyop.com/2024/04/21/the-daily-grind-how-much-do-graphics-matter-to-you-in-an-mmorpg

Bogusmeatfactory,
@Bogusmeatfactory@dosgame.club avatar

@massivelyop I actually prefer lower fidelity graphics in my MMOs. It helps with readability and orientation in the world. When graphics become too realistic and dense, your brain just sorts of tunes it out so it makes it difficult to get your bearings and for things to stand out to you.

Bogusmeatfactory,
@Bogusmeatfactory@dosgame.club avatar

@mrgrgr @massivelyop absolutely beautiful! And it isnt recency bias at all! Elden Ring and the Souls games do a stellar job in design. They use sight lines, create compelling landmarks and offer a large breadth of scale that requires exploration and experimentation, much like in EQ.

It is a skill I wish we saw more of in the development of games! If you haven't heard of Monsters and Memories, I highly recommend checking it out. It is capturing the old EQ feel visually and gameplay wise
