Just got a card from a student who has been having a rough year. She was having a great deal of trouble until I started showing her how to really USE a calculator. (It's algebra and geometry not arithmetic, and she knows the algorithms just makes SO MANY little mistakes)

Since then she's really taken off. I find very few people who could benefit from calculators know how to use them effectively, and there is a lot of snootiness and stigma in the way of this happening.

I used to love math including algebra until we got to calculus, and specifically integrating functions. That we had reached a part of math that was essentially trial and error made no sense to me, and I hated it.

In other news, the value of existing keyboards without the co-pilot key has suddenly increased by 30%, and Kevin's vintage IBM with Cheetos crumbs between the keys will soon be going under the gravel at Sotheby's.

Regarding the jump ships in Foundation
(Apple tv)

Has anyone else noticed that the jump engine rings look a lot like the alien machine in the 1997 movie Contact?

I hope the is satisfactory.
Ping @nyrath et le @TheSpaceshipper

A large machine built on earth based on alien plans sent to us via inter-galactic radio signal, about ten stories high, also consisting of nested rings in the manner of a gyroscope, into which is dropped Jodie Foster's character to be sent to meet said aliens

Reminds me of these things, which I think was probably Russian and did not catch on, like many soviet experimental vehicles, but is still cool.

This I imagine would be piloted like a tank, with two levers to apply forward or reverse to either side, ideally on very rough terrain such as snow or tall grass

A gif of a drawing of a vehicle about the size of a truck, with a forward control cabin, but whose propulsion consists of a large screw cylinder on either side.

Whenever I see "there is a planet in the habitable zone, but it's a gas giant" I always think gas giants can have rocky moons so it's still a viable candidate for habitability.

Finding a gas giant isn't a downer. I would even go so far as to say a large gas giant in the habitable zone potentially increases the possibilities of a habitable world. Even accounting for radiation belts. The number of moons they can have ups the dice rolls.

Very cool! I am particularly stunned by Iapetus' equatorial ridge, which I never knew about.

I wonder if it was an inspiration for Kim Stanley Robinson's early work, A Short, Sharp Shock, in which a man with amnesia awakens on a world which consists only of a narrow strip of land around the center of a planet, separating two oceans.

The local people's creation myth was of a snake encircling the world.

We've all heard "My Dad had one of those" about cars.

I want to know what your Mum had as her car to get about. Wherever you are in the world, whatever time period. What vehicle did your Mum (or other maternal guardian) cherish and use and wax lyrical about?

I might be planning a little project...

My Mum had a moped, a Honda Cub I think (I'll have to dig out a photo), that was her freedom in the 70s.

My buddy's mom had a relative of the Olds Vista Cruiser - the Chevy Caprice Classic Wagon. I used to walk with him on his paper run, but sometimes when the weather was terrible (and this is Canada so you can imagine it had to be pretty awful), his mom would drive us slowly around the neighbourhood while we sat on the tailgate and threw papers roughly where they belonged. Good times...

And I would live not in Deckard's apartment,

Are there any tricks or tools to help know one's state of hydration and such balance as you say above? Like a glucose meter or smart watch or whatever? I feel like I never quite know how hydrated I am as I don't always feel thirsty when needed. I once went to give blood and passed out, then was scolded by the nurse for being dehydrated beforehand like it was my fault. I try to drink water as much as possible but it would be nice to have more data points.
