To be fair, it's easy to forget something that costs more than you were ever going to spend for it, to do things that your phone and/or laptop already do better

@scalzi the social costs of wearing a blindfold remain too high.

Added a 3D printer to the shop this week. Prussa MK3S, acquired second hand from a fellow who didn't successfully assemble the kit. It's now running beautifully. First useful items the next day. A bushing for my 5C drawbar which pulled 2 10ths out of my run out, and a press-on handle for the tube. Even just press-fit it provides enough traction to hold the work well. Both designed in .

A donut shaped handwheel on the window of the draw tube in the spindle of a metal lathe.

A fine Graham MacKay from Saturday...

I'm thinking PP's going to stick with the strategy:

  • blame vulnerable minorities for everything
  • say little to nothing in campaigns. Offer no solutions.
  • after the election, pivot to a Doug Ford style kleptocracy.

The "working class" supporters get nothing. They got nothing from Harper. They got nothing from Ford. They got not much from Trudeau.

Flux,

@johnefrancis nothing? Pharmacare? Child care?
It's popular in the press to downplay these successes. Don't do PP's work for him!

Today was my last day at #Nvidia. Four years where I've never been better aligned between my interests, my abilities, and my responsibilities. I'm incredibly proud of how far #GeForceNOW has come in that time.
What's next? After nearly 40 years of being paid to write software it's time to retire and spend time moving whole atoms instead of just electrons.
I'm certain there will be software - it is the most tractable medium I've ever worked with - but now it will be to scratch my own itches.

Raising capital gains taxes on the portion over 250k: A very nice move in the new budget. It's unreasonable that large incomes from capital gains have been taxed at half of the income from the sweat of the brow.

Garrison Keillor is really strange to me career wise. He wrote exactly one outstanding novel - his first. Then ever after he wrote the same novel, only worse, and with more weird sex stuff. He also wrote very good (really!) poems early on, and then over time what he counts as poems is just aw-shucks Minnesota stuff. It's like he noped out of a lasting literary career for kitsch.

Cut the tapers on this part, and just reached for it to test fit the pins that will go through the holes (to spin the part on the rotary table) and poof it has vanished into thin air. The shop isn't even a disaster area. I'm reduced to looking instead of remembering.
Vexed.

@aral it's highly likely that the tracking and use of the data is so fully automated that no person ever even thought "we should collect data on disabilities through the DMV site".
That doesn't excuse the ill-use, but can explain it. Automation leads to all sorts of perverse effects.

Retirement party prep work pretty much done. The raclette melter emerged from the workshop over the last couple of weeks. That wheel of cheese will get chopped in half at the right moment, the power will go on, and we'll get it melting.

publishes the Fraser institute's "but the wealthy already pay almost all of the taxes!"
Of course the wealthy pay most of the taxes. When you have low income the tax bite cuts deeply into your ability to pay rent and feed your family. When you have high income you can pay much more without threat of homelessness or starvation.
That's the basis of progressive taxation.
If the FI wants the poor to pay a higher share they should back a flatter income distribution.

I just spent some hours with the ghosts of projects past, moving the lumber I've been storing for much too long. I had a little lapstrake boat on the molds when some eye problems shut down my shop work for 3-4 years, some 20 years ago. When that was resolved a lot of other things had changed.

The good news is that the itch is returning, I have space to work in, and now I'm actively figuring out how to make the time for myself.

A decent sized pile of lumber, with the backbone of the boat in the other photograph sitting on top. The pile includes planking lumber for the boat, some oak for some furniture I haven't built, some pine to finish trimming out my spouse's weaving studio.

@pluralistic writes: For longer-form works like novels, I "leave myself a rough edge," finishing the day's work in the middle of a sentence. That way I get a few words for free the next day, meaning I never start the day's work wondering which words I'll type"

I do this for software - end the day with a necessary cleanup, or a scope block just opened and unfinished. I never thought of applying it to writing! Genius.

Four scrolls in a frame. Many collars left to make.
