Trump is telling us exactly what he plans to do if he gets another term. He is framing his return to power as an authoritarian effort, and he is overtly using Nazi language and symbolism to drive home the point.

This wasn't a mistake. It isn't a joke. American freedom and democracy are on the line in 2024. The main headline in Trump's ad asks: "What's Next for America?" Trump's answer: authoritarianism and fascism.

If employers have been unable to prosper due to a skills shortage then that AI may be enhance productivity looks like good news....

But, if employers are unable to find staff because they don't pay enough & offer rubbish working conditions, then a move to AI will confirm capitalists want to replace workers with technology, as they have done before, but now in the service sector(s).

If you're a Keynsian you'll now be wondering about 'effective demand'!

Lets be absolutely clear - at the centre of the infected blood scandal, as so many other 'scandals' involving institutions riding rough-shod over the interests & well-being of ordinary people (see the posted list & additions in my timeline over the weekend) is one thing:

People in power lying to those whose lives have been ruined.

LYING... not making mistakes, not misunderstanding... LYING.

This is the culture that infects our political & social 'elites'; being (very) comfortable lying to us!

Blair has an interesting video (and article) discussion efficiency paradox.

36 min video (I think blair posted its companion article on his website)

Another angle on why energy efficiency and renewables are not quite the way to adopt to climate change. It’s the mode of basic subsistence that is most urgently needed, all that ecological restoration and green (biomass in cities) stuff because it’s different kind of efficiency.

In the past, countries used fossil fuels to develop, as these happened to be the energy sources available. Now we have renewables, so we can abandon fossil fuels.

Environmental destruction is not inherent to industrial civilization, but is caused by capitalism. The growth imperative is a feature of capitalism and not part of any unchanging human nature.

By adopting a different economic/political system we can resolve all ecological tensions.

Is this story true? How would I know if it is?

We may get to a point that cities donate as a matter of self preservation. Strongtowns works on ending the suburban experiment. Cities are interested in that because financial solvency and the fact that housing is at crisis levels.

We really need to rethink our capitalistic obsession of running things like a business. Cutting costs to increase profits obviously doesn't make sense in areas of education, healthcare, public utilities, and prisons, to name just a few.

Hell, Boeing is making a strong case that it doesn't even make sense for businesses to be run like a business, much less these public goods...

GhostOnTheHalfShell,
@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai avatar

@FantasticalEconomics

Boeing isn’t run like a business, it’s being strip mined. Investment practice is distinct from manufacturing practice, but the former has come to dominate in the US, UK and is creeping through Canada, despite it’s unique talent for destroying everything it touches.

Consider that very capitalist Singapore ditched neoliberalism when it blew up in their face. Their outlook is result orient, not ideological.

Yes we can thank Friedman for advancing that false dichotomy as well as false equivalence (ie that capitalism = freedom and prosperity). Since picking over some of the classic interviews of him (Phil Donanhue'79) and being much more aware of logical fallacies, his methods glaringly mendacious.

"Truly important and significant hypotheses will be found to have "assumptions" that are wildly inaccurate descriptive representations of reality, and, in general, the more significant the theory, the more unrealistic the assumptions (in this sense) (p. 14)."

It's an overt ask that people surrender their critical faculties and an frontal assault on epistemology. The man might as well argue spontaneous generation.
