My short term memory isn’t so great, so I will often find myself putting the same things off over-and-over again in an endless loop.

Do you ever deal with this?

Awake

I slept better than prior 2 nights, but not great. Basically I'll be about the same as yesterday, but hopefully the physical symptoms of caffeine withdrawal remain milder than yesterday.

There's an approaching line of showers and thunderstorms that might make the morning sit and chat with Ginza impossible if she doesn't show up.

But I'm trying to get sorted. I have eaten a banana and am drinking the decaf tea. Have washed and smoothed face.

Next put on clothes and brush hair.

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@IzabelaKaramia I had to take a diazepam at 4am last night because I was no closer to sleep than at midnight. It's frustrating.

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@IzabelaKaramia Odd meds reactions are always tricky. Strangely, the pure tranquilliser is easier on me the next day then any of the less hardcore ones! I used to have herbal calming pills that were safe for kids, and my children used them, but they wiped me out completely.

Awake.

I've changed into clothes and look presentable enough that I can go outside and not look like an uncivilized wreck. But I plan to shower after the anticipated sit and chat with Ginza takes place.

I always feel a bit wrecked if I wake up during the night and then don't get back to sleep til 3 AM or later.

I've had my last regular tea. After today I'll be back to decaffeinated me.

Ate a banana for starter breakfast.

After I finish this cup of decaf tea, I will go out and shake

Deadly global heatwaves undeniably result of climate crisis, scientists show
Analysis makes it clear human-caused global heating is destroying lives with worse to come without sharp emissions cuts

@Andy_Scollick I was pleasantly surprised to hear the Greek president announcing that the climate crisis is the main culprit in the wildfires ravaging parts of Greece at the moment. I have not heard a head of a country say that before. Of course, he also said there's no magic bullet to fixing it, and no mention of cutting emissions, but I guess that would be a step too far.

Ants, like humans, are most often omnivores. Ant colonies thrive on insect protein.

While my colonies will eat frozen dead insects what they seem to eat most quickly are freshly killed insects.

So, normally I grab a Blaptica dubia and cut it into bits with scissors. Reasoning this was as good as a guillotine applied to a king.

Well. One of them survived hid in the ant's trash pile and grew back most of its body.

I'm shocked!

Daughter is going to Camp this year.

Her father invited her because he has some extra tickets, and then gave me an abbreviated list of things I would have to pay for - transportation, food, everything else really.

My feeling is that this means she gets to do what she wants there, and that this is not a vacation with her father.

Ok here is an image, what follows is a poll about what it shows.

Is it:

A. A dog sneaks into an empty lot then joyfully chases its own tail.

B. A dog looks with longing at other dogs playing through a fence.

C. Something else?

Saturday morning I was wondering whether people I know in real life even see these kinds of graphs. I decided to find out by sharing it in WhatsApp groups I am in (not all but was quite brave - included colleagues, family, etc) posting it with this message.

Entirely unscientific, badly worded etc, but I am so glad I did! I learned a number of interesting things:

  1. In every group, 70-90 % of people had never seen this graph and do not normally see these graphs. 1/x
GinevraCat,

@pvonhellermannn I quite often put these kinds of posts on my WhatsApp status. So far I haven't had any response.

@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@Brendanjones @pvonhellermannn I have only lived here for 3 years. I find Dutch people in general far less concerned with the daily realities of climate change and conservation than South Africans (previous country). e.g. Rubbish is religiously sorted, but single use plastic is widely and blithely used, especially balloons. (I hate balloons!)

3.5 years of constant caution and sacrifice, withholding dinners at restaurants & concerts, and I let one professional event encourage me to take needless risks. I spoke in a room with 80 people without a mask. I asked the event planner to have air filters in the room, but she said "their effectiveness for Covid prevention is limited," which is, of course, BS, and that should've been when I withdrew from the event. I let my guard down, and now I have my first infection. Be safe out there!

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@augieray I'm so sorry. It sucks anyway to get COVID, but it is especially unfair when you've been so cautious.

Older Millennials and GenX
have a unique perspective on the before and after world.

We use (and build) them now, but we grew up without IoT, without social media, without "smart" phones. When cameras were big and privacy was some sort of the default.

We have an important responsibility to fight for privacy rights so that younger generations will also know the freedom given by these rights.

We cannot let society
make them think this is normal and that nothing else is possible.

We must fight for for them too ✊🔒

GinevraCat,

@Em0nM4stodon Right! I got my first smart phone when my second child was a baby.

@davefarley77 and @apaipi in The Engingering room On The Poor Standard Of Teaching In Computer Science
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2LQg-dgiEM

While listening I'm wondering if education In CS is like (here comes a bad analogy) :
Teaching everything we know about materials and then expect the students to be able to build a cathedral with them. Then in the actual job 'out there' we need to figure out why an old cathedral is crumbling, how to fix that. and how to make it a modern cathedral.

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@allenholub @GeePawHill @AstridSawatzky @davefarley77 @yisraeldov @prefec2 @apaipi I started working in 2001 with only a single year of formal computer science and pretty much learned on the job until my last position in systems integration, which I loved.

The things I most needed were learning fast, and how to properly QC every part of the process, starting with a specification…

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@AstridSawatzky @yisraeldov @prefec2 @GeePawHill @davefarley77 @allenholub @apaipi I haven’t really done any agile stuff, but mostly big top down process-driven systems like automation, fleet management, POS and banking. The skills I most used were both technical (databases, code review, lots and LOTS of debugging / refactoring) and social - working in a team, customer relations ….

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@allenholub @yisraeldov @prefec2 @AstridSawatzky @apaipi @davefarley77 @GeePawHill Not having done formal CS, I most missed db design principles, and possible some of the low level, embedded software data structure / memory management stuff, some system design principles. I have never missed a specific programming language or technology, those were all on-the-job anyway.

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@prefec2 Damn. You’re right. I’ll have to put that back in my junior course. gives exaggerated sigh (junior being high school).
