Any time I hear politicians or journalists use the word "terrorist" I read it as a clear sign of bias and trying to imply that one side is evil and therefore any action is justified.

There are no terrorists, just people, some of whom are (war) criminals.

Replace terrorist with your favorite "evil" race from fantasy. eg. orc.

We can happily listen to Gimli chatting about enjoying hewing orc skulls, because they're not human. "Terrorist" is designed to make us feel that way about other people.

@witchescauldron@kolektiva.social avatar

Is that also true for what you’re calling the “spiky” approach? That unless people have actually experienced it they wouldn’t be able to judge it?

You guys experienced it here, when I came to this well “fluffy” space I was met with a well “spiky” reception. The more dogmatic liberals can often be VERY spiky were the radicals are generally kinda “fluffy” in their actual outcomes. Lifting the lid and look at the actions, don’t take what people say at face value, to see the fluffy/spiky debate in action, by lifting this lid you start to build a bridge…

Putting and holding this bridge in place is the start of power for social change/challenge.

witchescauldron, to random
@witchescauldron@kolektiva.social avatar

So I think we have to actually experience an approach or a tool before we can say if it is “fluffy” or “spiky”, or works in a mess.

Yep, best to build tools/process from “lived expirence”. We are swimming in a river of social shit with the of neo-liberalism and postmodernism that is the bases of “thinking”. Thou these ideology died years ago, the zombies of both are still eating our social brains.

witchescauldron, to random
@witchescauldron@kolektiva.social avatar

Also that whatever process people use, it needs to work in the mess.

In tech outreach work using the hashtag to highlight the “need for control” that is a clear block and not a solution to the very human mess we are in. We need to build structers/code where we “lose” control of our current agenders and take “control” by building bridges and holding these human bridges in place, so we can choose different paths.

witchescauldron, to random
@witchescauldron@kolektiva.social avatar

And that given the and the swing to the right it’s really important to keep having the “debate” about which approach to use.

The “debate” is in this case is a metaphor for action, it’s important to keep both approaches working and hold a bridge in place, so people can cross and communicate between them.

witchescauldron, to random
@witchescauldron@kolektiva.social avatar

You’re also saying that the “spiky” approach to governance has more value for our society.

The agender always supports the aproch and pushes down the aproch so its less a question of right/wrong more a question of holding the balance agenst this pushing. The balance is where maximum power lies. So yes in this forum, and in general, the “spiky” aproch has more “power” than the fluffy aproch simple because its is repressed by the mainstream and meany of the “common sense” fluffy crew.

"Our own political life is predicated on openness. We do not believe any group of men adequate enough or wise enough to operate without scrutiny or without criticism. We know that the only way to avoid error is to detect it, that the only way to detect it is to be free to enquire. We know that the wages of secrecy are corruption. We know that in secrecy error, undetected, will flourish and subvert."

Quite a few podcasts do bonus episodes for financial supporters.

It works: sooner or later, you're going to spot a bonus episode you really want to listen to.

But it also makes me a bit sad, because it's like a paywall: I get access, but nobody else does.

One way around that is timed release. Even if it's only after a year, making bonus episodes free eventually makes me feel a lot better about getting "exclusive" access.

Just a suggestion from a loyal listener to many podcasts :)

Today I filed a formal complaint against with the Irish Data Protection Commissioner for their illegal deployment of detection technologies.

Under Article 5(3) of 2002/58/EC YouTube are legally obligated to obtain consent before storing or accessing information already stored on an end user's terminal equipment unless it is strictly necessary for the provisions of the requested service.

In 2016 the EU Commission confirmed in writing that adblock detection requires consent.

We made it to the opening of "radical landscapes" with Thalia Campbell to sit next to her banner.

rooftopaxx,

@Hamishcampbell Presumably that's not the "radical landscapes" that was at the Tate last year and is the one that just opened at the William Morris Gallery?

If the community has not already forged and formed itself such that they will self-support, then it's time to let go.

While I don't see masto as particularly harmful, it and the fediverse as it currently stands is not proving to be one of the ways to solve actual problems.

Social media is useless to most people, in much the same way as news media.

We need social discussion, or social cooperation, social news facts ? and social tools to

if you’re curious about some of the other things i had to deal with trying to get the iOS app approved, here’s another good one. It was rejected at one point because servers were accepting tips/donations. So I literally had to filter out any kind of link that went to PayPal/Stripe/Ko-fi or has the world “donate” or “tip”.

people bring alternative people down to their level, which is vile with the current 40 years of mess making. You can't talk to them about this, so likely it's best to just ignore them? What do you think we should do?

Just a reminder that post.news, the platform many journalists got all excited about before they got all excited about BlueSky, is funded by Andreessen Horowitz. That's Andreessen of recent manifesto fame. In case you still have an account there.

Not that it matters much since it's quietly dying entirely on its own.

Fellow independent musicians: If we're ever going to break this cycle of platform dependency, betrayal, and disappointment, we'll have to build and run the MP3.com/MySpace/SoundCloud/BandCamp replacement ourselves. https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/epic-games-cuts-almost-half-of-bandcamp-pre-songtradr-sale

The problem we face on the is the "shouting into the void" that the brings with it. This is affecting all new social networks, the signal to noise is degrading everyone's experience. I think in part this is a failure of copying that we need to move past soon

It's been getting harder and harder to find the kind of videos I usually watch on , and I think I just realized why.

I suspect they might be turning down the flow of algorithmically matched videos in preparation to get YouTubers to pay in order to get anything seen. Part of the playbook as detailed by Cory Doctorow.

Holding out hope YouTube shoots itself in the foot so hard that gets more uploaders and takes off as an alternative.
