there are people who consciously or subconsciously try to gatekeep who is 'implementing' the social web.

anyone who is creating content on the web, even if it is clicking buttons on mastodon.social, is 'implementing' it. the people and the content and the relationships are what makes it valuable, not the standards or code or tooling or process.

alienate the people and they will leave your fiefdoms. you did it once and you can do it again and again

Now that have hijacked , unix, , and the entire StackOverflow family of sites, CloudGlare are more able to learn the types of work people might be doing.

Just more anti-competitive of the dumpster fire we can .

We can't bomb CloudGlare datacenters, so a distributed system is needed.

Btw, the great activism instance we've been on for years is going offline on 8 Oct due to no funding. Also it seems that mastodon., and block us, and our account is somehow limited.

It is 100% , Google has full control over the data you added and people can only access Google Maps over proprietary channels where Google dictates the rules. This gives them too much power.

Surveillance capitalism isn’t some horrible corruption of capitalism, it’s just capitalism in the age of the ubiquitous digital network.

The problem isn’t things that were good becoming bad. The problem is things that have always been bad finally negatively affecting even those with bucketloads of privilege who are now attempting to explain away why they were ok with it all before.

The UK was a wealthy country. Then conservatives imposed austerity to "save money."

Now the UK is largely a poor country. Outside London it is poorer than Mississippi. NHS being killed off. Schools, infrastructure, etc.

But the rich are doing very, very well indeed.

We are shutting down our mastodon activists instance next month. We are going to look at the sustainability of the campaign instance, but think it's half paying it hosting costs, activism covered no costs over a year. Will do funding outreach for this campaign instance over the next few months, we plan to keep it online, but it would be nice if it covered its hosting costs and help cover the costs of the wider

People are going to use as their full-service single-user instances. It's going to be awesome for independent writers, much better than etc. We're not there yet but it's coming. The value of decentralization and FOSS for journalism done in the service of is undeniable.

Please note that webfinger is a mastodon thing, just a point of failure which is not in the ActivityPub spec. cause ActivityPub does not necessarily force you to clone the twitter-handle style. :)

Twas a week ago exactly that we discovered our instance will be shut down due to a lack of funds. The activism instance has been operating for years and helping activists.

Please help your fellow activists if you can, especially, if you live in the or Europe and can donate more anonymously.

For evidence, of how "" does not work, just look at this instance. It has been giving a voice to activists for years and yet is not able to sustain itself at a mere $40 per month.

Our long-running activism instance (UK-based but they move through Europe by boat) is having to shut down on 8 October due to no funds.
