@Lane@dice.camp

I've always been an avid gamer and designer, not usually computer games, but mostly table-top games, especially TTRPGs. Right now our group is playing a Traveller campaign, in a unique setting and with 3D star maps.

My favorite board games are chess and World in Flames. I'm in a committed relationship, and I love the Lakers.

I'm also a musician, and I appreciate humor, especially political.

I'm not generally annoyed by discussion of D&D, and can even often participate, but the period of ramp-up to new books is tiring.

I don't have judgment for anyone; I've got my list of crap companies I buy from - but I'm just.... not going to be giving Wizards any money.

I just deleted Risk from my phone, as part of a Hasbro boycott. I'll still play in a D&D group if that's what's happening, but DMing, or giving Hasbro a penny? Nope.

Analysis

"Nearly 100% of Campus Gaza Protests Have Been Peaceful"

Of 553 US campus protests, 97% remained non-violent.

Of the 3%, half were from clashes with police sent in to clear peaceful protests.

"If someone is speaking more about 'violent encampments' than they are about violent genocide of the Palestinians, they have a problem reflective of deep and dangerous biases."

This is akin to MAGA claiming that BLM was violent, based on a few incidents, mostly vandalism and looting, while ignoring the fact that, based on the number of people who protested, 1/6 was 100 times more violent and destructive. They are not comparable. Perhaps 10,000 surrounded the Capitol that day, while for BLM, 20 million people marched in the US alone.

“However, there is something intuitive about the four elements and the roles they play…

“… a character jumping across rooftops would roll his Fire dice, a character dodging bullets would roll his Water dice, a character intimidating a foe would roll Air, and a character resisting a mind-control spell would roll Earth.” -

I feel like the author & I are working from different definitions of the word “intuitive”

In Buddhism, Samsara (the future) seems to flow from having an imbalance. If I wanted to opt out of that, maybe no karma (one way or the other) could be a path, with a clear karmic slate, nothing owed.

Lane,

Just tossing out fuel for ideas related to karma. I find our games benefit from new angles, and even outright mistakes can be suddenly valid.

And the idea of 'taint' felt like having an unclear karmic slate, so I thought I'd make that comment.

Co-moderation is probably more than most of the current generation of TTRPG players are willing to commit to, but any inclination in that direction is a step towards the future of the hobby.

Games that enter that realm, such as Fiasco, or Ironsworn, may be part of what saves the hobby from Hasbro and their secret ambition to eventually phase out DMs.

Whoever sees this, I ask that you be open to co-moderation when opportunities arise.

I like the novel Dune more than I do LotR, and I think the latest Dune adaptation (both movies taken as a whole) are excellent, and mostly faithful to the book.

But the LotR movies, while admittedly taking a lot of liberties, are so monumental and innovative that they still eclipse the cinematic Dune.

That said, Zendaya probably deserves a nomination next year, for playing Chani in part 2.

They take thousands of Ukraine's children to be indoctrinated, bomb their civilian infrastructure, rape their women, and steal their grain, 90 years after the Holodomor. They did it then, they're doing it now, and they'll do it again if permitted.

But J. D. Vance thinks Ukraine should give up land to make peace, because as we all know, Russia honors their agreements. I wonder if Ron Howard, Amy Adams and Glen Close regret having put cash in that asshole's pocket.

1l of (4°C) water weighs 1kg.
1kg (of anything) is 1000g.
1g of water is 1cm³.
Stack 1000 1cm³ blocks to get a 10m high column.
This column exerts a pressure of 1 bar at its base.*
To heat it by 1°C, you would need 1kcal.
And 1N would accelerate it by 1m/s every second.

I had to google how many inches are in 7 feet.
And I think that's stupid.

Lane,
@Lane@dice.camp avatar

@BigJackBrass @Luccus @cstross

Distance should be in paces (very close to 2.5 feet or .75 meters). Who cares how long the King's foot was? And the distance from the Equator to the North Pole is meaningless at a human scale. Paces damnit!

Militaries already use them. Paces are the best measure to split the difference between the two accepted standards.

Then you can define volume using that standard, for our ales and lagers.

Your pirate crew has a lecherous gunner who keeps getting distracted by the nude figurehead on the galleon.

Fighting to the top of the steps, only to realize the bard with the Key is still at the bottom.

The Heir is so vain that he has fresh polished armor along with him in battle, to change into after the fighting.

REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

We were inspired by Man-to-Man when it was new, a tactically challenging TTRPG system, but in retrospect, we decided that GURPS could have taken it a step further. They could have dispensed with attributes entirely, and shifted everything to advantages and disadvantages, which are after all the heart of the system's character generation.
